President Kennedy assassinated

Post by FRJ »

President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963.
I'm always amazed when it doesn't make headlines.
It was mentioned in a blurb in " This day in history" in my morning paper. That's it!
I was in a high school history class at the time. Somehow the event has stayed with me. It was very profound.
I think we are far too distracted.

Of course, 1963. Thank you, Jerry. My apologies.

I was stationed at MCRD San Diego, going through Basic Electronics School. We were walking across the west end of the grinder, headed for chow when someone coming back from chow shouted at us, "Hey! Did you hear that Kennedy's been shot?"

This is truly one of those "always remember where you were" moments. I was in 8th grade in Kansas, coming down the stairs from lunch at school, someone yelled to me "Kennedy was shot!" The only other similar time was when the World Trade Centers collapsed. Both events beyond belief at the time.

I was a freshman in high school at the time, in a small town north of Dallas. Several kids had cut class and gone to Dallas to see the Presidential parade. I was having lunch in the school cafeteria when someone said they heard on the radio that President Kennedy has been shot. At first we thought it was a poor joke, and said so (we didn't believe it). Shortly afterward it was announced over the school PA system everyone should go to their "home room" classrooms. Once there the school principal announced over the PA system that President Kennedy had been shot but that we should continue our normal class schedule the rest of the day. Later that afternoon they announced the president had died and that the school's football game scheduled for that night was cancelled.

Finally something that doesn't make me feel old. I was two years old at the time and I don't remember it.

I was in Freshman Science class when it was announced over the PA system.

A lot of people do not remember that Kennedy was not universally revered as he seems to be today.
When it was announced one guy stood up and cheered and clapped. As the gravity of the situation sunk in, he stopped cheering and several girls began crying.

I was in the third grade, really to young to understand the ramifications of the situation, but I remember emotionally strained voice of our principle announcing over the intercom that our President had been assassinated and school was cancelled. When my mom came to pick me up I could tell that she had been crying. It was as if a blanket of sorrow had been lain upon our country. Those were very different times and people viewed themselves as Americans not Republicans or democrats. The three days that Kennedy lay in state and the masses that lined the streets to view his body was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life.

I must agree with Dale's statement that President Kennedy was not revered by a lot of folks back in the day. In our area of central Florida at that time, the big issue was his church affiliation, folks thought he would answer to the Pope first. His politics would be welcomed today by a lot of Americans who hold conservative views.
I was in a 12th grade psychology class and I remember when the announcement came over the PA system a girl in the back of the class room burst out crying. Some of us didn't have enough sense to realize what was really going on. :( Seems like the country came to a halt for a few days, glued to the TV to see what was happening.

I was in grade school and out on the playground when someone came out shouting the news. Our school back in that day did not have a TV set in the building, so the janitor who lived in the house next door brought his TV over and set it up in the auditorium with a rabbit ear antenna. Everyone sat there in silence and watched.

I was in 3rd grade and had come home for lunch.

I was waiting next door at the Methodist preacher's parsonage to head back to school with their son, Johnny, when Mrs. Allen came out and told us that the president had been shot in Dallas and that school was canceled for the rest of the day.

Everyone just kinda sat around listening to the radio news reports.

Things are sure different now days with how rapidly news and rumor fly compared to back then.

I was four when JFK was assassinated but I remember when Robert was shot. I asked my grandmother "Who is doing this", and she said "Scott". ::hmm::

5th grade, afternoon recess, we were outside playing... the teachers called us in early and told us the news. They sent us home early from school. No bus, because it was early, so I walked home several miles through the backwoods and farm fields. I still have the Life Magazine with John John saluting his father's casket. We were pretty shook up.
