R.I.P. Tom Petty

Post by Tsar Bomba »

Tom Petty was taken off life-support today with no discernable brain activity after suffering a heart attack Sunday evening. It was just announced (within the last hour) that he has died. He was 66 years old.

Rest in peace, Tom. You and your infectious, homespun energy will be sorely missed.

That's really sad. I've listened to his music since the 70's. This is a huge loss...

Consummate Rock and crossover musician.

We used to listen to his albums while doing heart surgery.

Tom Petty and The Heart Breakers.

How appropriate.

He will be missed. Too young to die.

I've never met Tom Petty, but he has been a part of my life experience in a positive way for 40+ years. RIP Tom you will be missed. Here is one my favorites from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Many of us likely have had some past experience that can relate to the "one foot in the grave and one foot on the pedal" line in the song.

Hard to believe. RIP Mr. Petty. He was part of the Traveling Wilburys in addition to his Heartbreakers work. All excellent.

You may not believe this but they are now retracting the statement of his death. Apparently it was issued in error by LAPD. Not sure what to believe at the moment.

::facepalm:: ::facepalm:: ::facepalm::
Then the LAPD issued a statement saying it has no information on Petty's condition and that "initial information was inadvertently provided to some media sources."
So the "initial information" which was ubiquitous this afternoon was that:

- Petty had a coronary Sunday evening and was found in full cardiac arrest at his home.
- He had no detectable brain activity today at some point.
- The decision was made (gotta love that passive voice) by someone to remove him from life support prior to 4pm.
- As of just after 4pm EDT, he was alive, off life support, and still not exhibiting any brain activity.

I personally then saw and heard the "death" story break almost immediately at the same time from four separate generally-reliable sources, including Reuters and Rolling Stone (say what you will, when it comes to rock star reporting they're the gold standard). Hell, the classic rock radio stations played hours of Petty every second song or so (to my satisfaction on the long drive home).

I'm inclined to say if Petty is a) alive, and b) not suffering from any of the above-reported maladies (i.e. if he has a chance of resuming a normal life at this point) then it was the LAPD themselves who screwed the pooch "inadvertantly". It stands to reason that a big enough heart attack and enough time in full arrest would lead to oxygen starvation in the brain -> brain death -> coma/life-support. But this is a Charlie Foxtrot all the way around IMO.

At this point I can only hope that Tom comes out of this one okay. So the he-said/he-said of law enforcement and the news media is unwelcome. Corroborate the stories and publish them right, people!! Or maybe I'll just turn on the local classic rock FM radio station and see if they stop playing constant Petty songs at any point. ::shrug::

THE MANDELA EFFECT!!! noo....

There is a video of TP, and the heart breakers receiving the "Keys to the City" in Gainsville, 2006. He grew up there, and was ... tough to control as a kid.
The band members were all so high when the mayor handed them the symbolic key that they all gave each other that look, and laughed.
I can't find that vid.

Well, here's hoping that he will still be able to laugh. No matter what has happened.
