I was close with the words.
Another good scene in that movie is short, but nice. It's Harry Dean Stanton, an accomplished musician, sitting on the stoop on family visitation day, playing guitar and singing Just A Closer Walk With Thee.

I was, at one time, a big fan of Martin Sheen's, before I became aware of his political views.
Haven't watched anything of his in years, until today.
One of my Special Forces friends, hardly a liberal, recommended a movie written, directed and co-produced by Emilio Estevez, Martin Sheen's son, and starring Martin Sheen and Estevez.
Very good movie.
I recommend it.
"The Way", from 2010.
Currently on Netflix.

My wife and I just returned from seeing Darkest Hour. Excellent movie. We went with three other couples. It was unanimous everyone thought the movie was excellent. It will be a gross injustice if Gary Oldman doesn't win an Oscar for his portrayal of Churchill.

That's one that has caught my attention lately. But, I rarely go out to see a movie.Mumbleypeg wrote:My wife and I just returned from seeing Darkest Hour.
Re-watched Gran Torino recently. A poignant film, and one of Eastwood's best, imo.

I saw The Hitman's Bodyguard a few months ago. A fun movie with lots of car chases, gunfire and explosions! It certainly won't be selected for any awards but it's a fun movie anyway.

WESTERNS: Two big favorites, The Outlaw Jody Wales and Unforgiven, both by Eastwood.
Although considered a classic, I have big problems with High Noon. You'll recall the townspeople refused to help Cooper. Even his deputy ran away. Historically the towns folk always fought when they knew a bank robbery was in progress. The James gang was terminated by citizens. The Dalton gang was wiped out when they tried to rob two banks simultaneously in Coffeyville Kansas. In both cases men ran to the hardware store and grabbed rifles. No snowflakes in those days.

Re: AAPK Movie Matinee
A bit of a resurrection of this thread.
Spent a couple hours yesterday afternoon watching The Magnificent Seven, the original with Yule Brenner, Steve McQueen, Eli Wallach...
Believe it or not, it was the first time I've seen it. I don't watch a lot of movies. I picked it up at the library; may have to purchase a copy.

Top ten westerns. Order them any way you choose but the big gun for me is Unforgiven with Clint Eastwood, followed very closely by True Grit.
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948)
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)
High Noon (1952)
The Searchers (1956)
Rio Bravo (1959)
Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)
True Grit (2010)
Unforgiven (1992)
A Fistful of Dollars (Per un Pugno di Dollari) (1964)
The Wild Bunch (1969)

Re: AAPK Movie Matinee
Resurrecting this old thread. Went to a movie last night for our big New Years Eve outing. Saw Knives Out and recommend it. An Agatha Christie-style comedy/who done it. About a multi-millionaire mystery writer who is found dead the morning following his 85th birthday party, attended by his dysfunctional family. All of whom had reasons to kill him. An apparent suicide, the cops are ready to quickly close the investigation, but an anonymous person has hired a famous private detective to investigate.
Lots of knives in it too - although it’s never mentioned the guy was obviously a knife collector, as there are fixed blade knives all over his house, and prominently visible in many scenes.

I enjoyed Hunted. In fact Benicio Del Toro makes his own knife while in the wilderness. Or was it Tommy Lee Jones?
Three action movies that are, imho, not to be missed; all three directed by the great John Sturges.
Bad Day At Black Rock
The Magnificent 7
The Wild Bunch.

When we went to see Rocketman (a disappointment after seeing Bohemian Rhapsody) there was a trailer for Knives Out and I, of course, thought it looked interesting. Anyone see The Rise of Skywalker yet?

Re: AAPK Movie Matinee
We took the grandkids to see The Rise of Skywalker after Christmas. My wife and I enjoyed it. I thought the actor (Oscar Isaac) who played one of the main characters was a poor actor. The kids (ages 10, 12 and14) said it was better than they had heard it was. It wasn’t until the last scene in the movie that I understood why the movie has that title. Maybe I’m just slow.1967redrider wrote: ↑Sun Jan 05, 2020 1:52 am When we went to see Rocketman (a disappointment after seeing Bohemian Rhapsody) there was a trailer for Knives Out and I, of course, thought it looked interesting. Thanks, Ken.
A bud of mine who's a die-hard Star Wars fan said he wasn't impressed, but he likes the Mandalorian series on Disney +. We're still going to see it. Brenda just started watching Star Wars flicks when she met me, hard to believe.

I shall be lampooned for this, but ....
I have never seen the original 3 Star Wars films in their entirety !
I've watched bits and pieces of each over the years, but never a whole movie.
And as far as the ridiculous number of sequels, prequels and useless hype;
highly unlikely I'll waste time on trying to figure out what 'order' they belong ....
Came in last evening and caught the last half of Every Which Way but Loose.
goofy movie but funny!

I need to correct myself. The Wild Bunch was directed by Sam Peckinpah. Sturges directed The Great Escape.

Re: AAPK Movie Matinee
The Wild Bunch is a GREAT movie. One of the things I really love about it is the firearms used. Since it was set in 1913, they used M1911 semi-autos, double action revolvers and Springfield & Mauser rifles. It was very cool to have a Western that was not just full of Colt SAA and 1892 lever rifles.
