Congratulations TF! I hope it’s the first of many more this year and for years to come.

Re: Outdoorsman Thread
Thanks for the kind comments, fellers!
I still go hunting in the mornings but not nearly as often as I do in the afternoons. When I was gainfully employed, PTR (prior to retirement), most days I would get off work at 3:30 pm, giving me just enough time to hurry home and out the back door and down to the woods. I killed about as many as anyone else and most were in the last half hour of daylight. Another thing said for afternoon hunt starting around 4 pm, you can't stay all day like when you go in the morning and there are always things to do at home.
I've learned to be more deliberate since I'm almost 3/4 of a century old. No more running up and down a ladder like a monkey, one careful step at a time. Might have been in better shape now if I had been more deliberate years ago.
As for trophy hunting, a legal deer is a trophy to me. I've killed a few nice ones and a bunch that lots of folks would pass because of size. Our little farm is only 80 acres and if he crosses the property line after I've fed him all year on green Rye, clover and shelled corn, the neighbors around me wont let him walk either. It takes a pretty good chunk of land to manage for antler growth unless all surrounding property owners are in agreement.
I'll keep on fiddling along as the Lord allows me to be in the woods, then maybe some of the young fellers will take pity on me and bring me a back strap now and then.

Very nice TF! I agree with you completely about the afternoon hunts. Here on my place they show up right before dark. I’ve always had better lock in the evening.

Merry Christmas Scott - looks like you have plenty of action going on with your group of young folks there! OH

Re: Outdoorsman Thread
Congratulations on your buck Phil. I spent almost three days in the woods early this week, one thing that occurred to me was how much I love just being in a tree stand and watching the woods - cannot imagine not having that available to me (I’m only 65) - do know what you mean about being extra careful though. OH
Ps one of my favorite stands, sits on a lane through a big block of swamp and pines near the Tar River, the area is full of deer, bear, turkey, not to mention hundreds of bluebirds and cardinals in the wintertime.

Re: Outdoorsman Thread
Scott, did you and your troopers stay out in the cold? Some of them little fellers may not have as tough of a hide as you!
Got some questions concerning the 2nd picture. What wood are you smoking with? How did the palm frond stems work as a grill or support for the meat?
Those stems, were they from a Cabbage palm?
Glad you're keeping them interested in the outdoors. Your grands have sure grown since we 1st saw pictures of them several years ago.

Looks deeeeeeeeeelicious, Scott, on my way!!!
Does this qualify as "outdoors?" It rained so much on Wednesday, the water is running down the ditch from the mountain and icing over the driveway. I think my brother was able to use the tractor bucket to divert it.

I am, Tom. But the 4 GSPs are out of control. Don't let that little one fool you, he's the worst instigator.

Re: Outdoorsman Thread
Sad story with a good ending. This little yearling doe got caught in the electric fence this evening, tangled up pretty good. The boys just happened to be playing in the back field and heard her. They went snd turned the fence off and the Great Pyrenees dogs, Carl and Bella, went back there and kept her from trying to get up (which kept her from getting hurt worse than she was).
So we did what was needed and now there’s some young tender venison in the cooler soaking. I used my brand new Christmas knife, CASE TB Tribal Lock CV to unzip Bambi’s britches. It worked fantastic.

Glad y'all were able to salvage the doe. Things such as that unfortunately happen all the time and usually go undetected. Glad you did what had to be done.

Re: Outdoorsman Thread
Getting in my first turns of 2020, almost didn't happen as the calendar is counting down. At Wisp in Western Maryland. Decent snow with some of the real stuff mixed in. Upper 30s but a cold wind from the North. The slopes are about half open, so it was a little crowded in the lift lines today. They only let people ride the chairlifts together that are in the same group. I felt bad riding Triples/Quads by myself but what else could I do?

Thanks gentlemen! The neighbor boys helped us with all the deer we took this year, including this one. So when this one comes out of the ice water soak I’m going to send them a back strap over. They’re pretty excited.treefarmer wrote: ↑Sun Dec 27, 2020 3:46 am Glad y'all were able to salvage the doe. Things such as that unfortunately happen all the time and usually go undetected.
