Re: YOUR USER NAME
My real name is Jerry. I notice there are a number of AAPK members named Jerry.
Ralph Alsip was a neighbor and role model for me growing up in Southern Illinois in the 60's and 70's. We lived in the country with a very self sufficient rural lifestyle (big garden, milk cow, chickens, hogs, etc.). Ralph introduced to me to knife trading, as well as arrowhead hunting, ginseng hunting, raccoon hunting and various other wholesome pursuits that I dearly miss. Ralph was a WW II veteran with an injured leg, but far from disabled. I learned a lot from Ralph. It takes lot of perseverance for a 10 year old boy to carry a toe sack full of possums and raccoons through the woods at night . Ralph was the epitome of perseverance. Ralph was well-known for his hound dogs. Ralph used the ginseng to make a special cold remedy and cough syrup. In addition to ginseng, Ralph's "medicine" contained honey, lemon, and a generous portion of Southern Comfort. Ralph took his medicine both to cure a cold and prevent a cold. He let me try it and I wasn't able to appreciate it as much as he did.
After I moved away from home to make my mark on the world, I lost connection with folks like Ralph and hobbies like knife collecting. Somehow I managed to hang onto some knives and arrowheads from back then even with all of the moving around I have done. A favorite saying of my dad's was that the good ole days weren't always so good, but I certainly have a much deeper appreciation now of where I came from than I did when I was there. In the past couple of years, I have re-engaged in knife and arrowhead collecting with great pleasure.
I wish Ralph could see my knife collection now. Or maybe not - he would probably skin me out of a few of them
So the short answer is that I chose my user name for nostalgic reasons.

Re: YOUR USER NAME
Mine came from a game we played with knives on the school playground when I was a kid. You read that right - it used to be common for boys (and a few girls even) to carry pocket knives at school. In fact as best I remember I carried one every day from about the age of 10 or 12 years old all the way through school and college. My first knife was a two blade Case jack that I bought while on school lunch break (and promptly lost within a couple of weeks to another kid as a result of losing a game of Mumbleypeg) with money I earned from doing chores at home. My how times have changed.

Sopchoppy is in NW Florida about 40 miles SW of Tallahassee. My sister has a cabin in the middle of nowhere close to the Ochlocknee River. It's 14 miles to the nearest stop sign and 30 miles to the nearest traffic light. Been going there since 1981 to hunt and fish.
I almost changed it to "Fred C. Dobbs". Anyone know where that name comes from?

The original Fred C. Dobbs was Humphrey Bogart's character in Treasure of the Sierra Madre. If you haven't seen it, do so. The line, "we don't. need no stinkin 'badges", is from that movie.

Re: YOUR USER NAME
The '60s & '70s were still a good time to grow up in Southern Illinois. There were still gravel roads and places to hunt and fish. Reading this is making me all nostalgic. Runnin' nets or trot lines or "telephoning" for catfish down on the Little Wabash River with my uncle Noble and running wild with my cousins down at my granddad's place are some of my fondest memories.RalphAlsip wrote:My real name is Jerry. When I was a kid, Hutty was my nickname and a play on my last name. So since this is a knife forum I just changed it over to Cutty.
There were other plays like Hut, Hut Two three Four ad nauseum but Hutty was most used

Re: YOUR USER NAME
When I was struggling to come up with a nick name for AAPK "Whiskey in the jar" from Metallica was playing in the background:
As I was goin' over
The Cork and Kerry mountains
I saw Captain Farrell
And his money he was countin'
I first produced my pistol
And then produced my rapier
I said, "Stand and deliver,"
Oh, "or the Devil, he may take ya"
So if anyone of you was thinking that I am a sailor or such I have to say "nope" - couldn´t get a wicker basket over a duck pond....

Re: YOUR USER NAME
I call you Skipper because you call yourself Captain and whether it be military, sea going or law enforcement, Captains are usually called Skipper. Besides, I'm rather partial to nicknames in case you haven't noticed.
I guess I could just call you Frank but then what fun would that be?
