New to this forum

Post by Sut Tatersaul »

Hi, All:
I am new to this forum, but have been around 86 years, and can' even remember my first knife. I have been accumulating knives all of my life. swapping, and trading for them, in all kinds of ways. When I was a dirty old construction worker, electrician, I played the old game called "Drop Your Knife". I'll bet not many of our members remember that game. While recovering from a broken leg, at age 9, A neighbor man gave me my first hunting knife, a Marbles leather washer handled knife. Can't remember the Model, but it served me well going through my learning to throw knives, and then served my Mom for many more years as her garden knife. I went through a stage where I thought the German made J.A. Henckels pocket knives were the cat's meow, and then "folding Lock open hunters, by Gun Companies. Then I made a couple. Now I just like them all, if they are well made. Well, thanks for sharing my long winded story.

Welcome to AAPK! I'm one here who has played the game, but we called it just "drop knife". In fact I still play it with a friend - we often do it before church and some knives we have swapped back and forth several times. But occasionally if it's a serious mismatch in knife quality we just laugh about it and put them back in our pockets. (Sometimes one or the other, or both of us, will intentionally bring a junker to the game just for laughs.)

Looking forward to more of your stories and hope you'll share more of your years of experience!

Hi, All:
313 Mike, The handle Sut Tatersaul the"Feather Merchant"was given to me by my old employer, and Mentor when I went into the IBEW aprentice program, to become an electrician. It came from the comic strip entitled Barny Google, and his race horse Sparkplug. there was a character in the strip named Sut Tatersaul, the Feather merchant. And my employer, boss, and best friend, nick named every one of his employes, and he gave me that "handle". That was in 1951, and it stuck with me all of my life. The comic strip Barny google, and Sparkplug, finally evolved into the comic strip Snuffy Smith. Then it finally fell into obscurity. It's gone now, but not forgotten.

Hi, All:
Mumbleypeg,
We used to play that game of dropping knives, on the construction jobs, in the 1950 era. Each player held concealed in his right hand, a knife of his selection, held over the upturned open left hand of his chosen player, and at a given signal both players dropped their chosen trade knife into the other player's hand. The trade was final. Sometimes the knife was a complete wreck, and sometimes it might be a very valuable knife, and that happened often enough to cause great interest in the game. You never knew what to expect. I have not heard of it being played for a long time. Another great game lost, but not forgotten, in the construction trades history.
