I just received today, a new Boker red smooth bone 3-blade whittler, model no. BO280SRBI. Beautiful knife, but one issue is the center brass piece at the end joint, that separates the 2 small blades. It actually moves a small bit and does not close up flush with the end joint when the 2 blades are closed.

Is this normal? I am reluctant to send it back, or should I pursue under the warranty process?

thanks - BluesK

Blueskat, I have a Hen & Rooster whittler where the brass piece looks similar to yours. Maybe this is normal, as there is no blade wobble whatsoever on my knife and the snap is super strong. Is there any blade wobble on yer knife?

Thanks Don. No, there is no blade wobble on mine either. Maybe this was how it was designed in the manufacturing process. I have an inquiry into Boker. Just killing me, cause I want to sharpen it! But holding off until I hear back from Boker.

Does your brass piece move just a bit when the the blades are in the closed position?

Yes it does. It will move up and down to where it touches the springs, but it does not move side to side.

Hey Blues, the whittler is the one Boker pattern that I've had trouble with. I bought one that had that same problem and sent it back. I don't think that small spacer is supposed to move. I think it's a flaw in the design.

I bought another one and the bolsters on the main blade were 2 different sizes - the seller tried to tell me that was nomal. Also, have you noticed that the main blades' spine sticks out past the backsprings when opened?

I like Boker but I think their whittler has some fit problems. Oh yeah - that spacer piece didn't move on the second one I bought. Sent it back too though because of the other 'issues' :(

Just curious, are your bolsters different sizes on the main blade - one longer on one side than the other?

TM-

mine is similar to Don's,,,,the brass spacer will move up and down to where it touches the springs, but it does not move side to side. Blades seem ok, no side wobble and snap is decent, not gator snapping strong, but decent. The bolsters seem ok, can not distinguish any length or size differences. The main blade spine is fine on mine,,,,level with the backsprings when opened. The backspring is a little uneven with the second spring when the pen blade is opened, but not too bad.

I agree with you,,,beginning to think it's a flaw in the design.

Interesting info BK. The only thing weird about the first one I bought was the moving spacer. Everything else about it was solid. It was at a later date when I tried getting that second one that I ran into the deal with the bolsters and blade fit - that thing looked like it had been pieced together from leftovers

I'm interested to hear what the guys at Boker tell you.

Great thread, by the way, everybody! I've really enjoyed looking at all these whittlers...... I think I need to get a few more ::tu::
