Re: Has anyone talked to Roland
Roland was one of my first knife friends on another knife forum. We used to email back and forth a lot about Henckels knives. One of a kind for sure.

Re: Has anyone talked to Roland
Just my limited amount of time talking with him. I had purchased a box of knives from him and back and forth texts that he wanted to make sure I was MORE than happy with the deal. With the many texts he was aware I had a surgery coming up, and in the summer was going to Europe, he asked if he could call me and asked for my phone number.
He called and as we talked he took 10 to 15 minutes to explain in detail the procedure I was about to have. The next part of the conversation went to asking me where all Cities and areas I would be at during my trip. As I told him all of my destinations he was I guess making notes while we talked.
The third part of the conversation went into he wanting me to understand what had happened to him, health wise and financial situation that he said “consumed him” and he wanted to warn me and not stretch myself thin when chasing knives and too make sure to stay in my financial means.
After a day or so I received a email from him with a list of thing he would love to have….. the list included pics of things he would like to see. While in Switzerland he asked me for pictures of the small little town that his daughter lives in. And pics of certain castle. While in Rome the list got larger… he wanted pics of most all ancient buildings and mostly pics from inside the Vatican.
While in Paris he wanted pics of 20 different artworks including The Mona Lisa. River and building and bridges.
I emailed him the pics he had asked for and he was truly excited be seeing them as much as I was seeing these beautiful places in person.
Back home and back to buying from him, I never purchased anything from him that he didn’t put extra stuff in the box. So I considered those extras as gifts, that makes that gift knife even more special to me.
Sorry about rambling but Roland was A ONE OF A KIND and the world is less without him.

Re: Has anyone talked to Roland
Not rambling at all Jamie. You had obviously become close with Roland and his passing has affected you deeply, and I find your comments honest and compassionate for your friend. I try to remember that our loved one's are very likely in a much better place when they pass and any hurt feelings I have are actually for myself. I'm sure our deceased friend got up this morning, cracked open a Kootenay, and headed out to his porch to enjoy the sunshine and make a few casts into the lake on his property, or perhaps even some relaxing whittling with his favorite knife. At least that's what I like to believe.

Roland was a fine gentleman, I am saddened to learn of his passing. OH
Deep in the guts of most men is buried the involuntary response to the hunter's horn, a prickle of the nape hairs, an acceleration of the pulse, an atavistic memory of his fathers, who killed first with stone, and then with club...Robert Ruark

Is this the Roland that was known here as Kootenay Joe?

Enjoyed my few post with Roland (KJ). He told it like it was. Save us some seats on the other side. R.I.P. J.O'.
Re: Has anyone talked to Roland
I didn't have much interaction with Roland here on AAPK or on BF. But after reading this thread, and the one in the Upper Room section, I'll say that the outpouring of love and memories show he was a person with great character and a wealth of knowledge. I'm sorry I didn't have the chance to know him. And my condolences to his friends here who knew him, and his family as well.
