Philosophical knife question.

Folks, I know that this question may have been asked and answered before, but just for kicks and giggles lets suppose that you are about to get on a spaceship to explore an unknown planet. You have to travel light and you are allowed only one folding and one fixed-blade knife and you know that there will be no replacements coming. It has to be from your present collection. (the rest of your stuff will end up with your brother-in-law who will sell your collection for pennies on the dollar to by crack) What are you going to take?

My choice of blades would be the
Benchmade Griptillion and a Case 337 6" Q.

After carrying the Bench Made every day for several years, I just don't think that I could improve on it as a tool, And I don't believe that either the Case or the Cattaraugus quartermaster knives could be improved on. They are heavy enough to use as a hatchet and the steel is something a normal human can sharpen to a razor edge on a rock. Yep, I may be a little old fashioned because if I was allowed a pistol it would be a 1911A1. (In .45 ACP as Mr. Browning intended.)

I had to think about this for a while - but I will have to go with my Puma White Hunter for the fixed blade and most likely a Case Utility/Scout for the pocket knife. Don't forget to take along something to sharpen them with.

I have to second the Quartermasters knife and the 1911 A 1. Staying with the criteria for a folder I would keep it simple with a # 8 Opinel.

Of course if I had my way instead of a folder I would carry a small Puuko

I presently own just two fixed blades, so the Morakniv Garberg would get that nod. Choosing a folder would be harder...I sort of lean towards a Victorinox SwissChamp.

Back in the early 1960s, prior to the early space capsule flights, NASA issued a specification and solicited proposals for a manned space flight survival knife. Several cutleries submitted sample knives for NASA consideration. W.R. Case & Sons submitted a sample, won the contract, and supplied the required number of knives to NASA. At the time these “space flights” were not intended to go to the moon - they went into space and returned after making a few revolutions around the earth. One of these knives was carried on every Gemini and Apollo manned space capsule flight. The purpose was not to “hack their way through the jungle on the moon” but rather to deal with any potential survival situation should the capsule crash land somewhere unintended upon return to the earth. However when all was said and done one of those Case “Astronaut Survival Knives” went to the moon and back a total of 9 times on Apollo flights.

In 1966 Case released a limited edition of a slightly modified, framed commemorative version of the same knife for sale to the public. In the early 1970’s I stumbled onto a store, a Case retailer, that had one of the framed knives on the wall behind the counter. I inquired about it and was told they had three of them and if I wanted I could buy one. The retail price was $75 IIRC. I bought all three of them for $165 plus tax. The following Saturday I sold one of them for $150. I still have the other two, in the original framed shadow boxes complete with the original pamphlet, etc.

Thanks for the comments on the Stone “Magnum” knife. G.W. created the design during the Vietnam War as a pilot survival knife. Several of them undoubtedly made their way to Vietnam.

So, I would have to take a Lon Humphrey Custom Knives Death Wind Fixed Blade Knife and My large stag trapper Bulldog just because it is so beautiful I could spend them space years travelling along admiring it.
