Pretty bone scales on case XX era knives

Back in the '50s, '60s, '70s you could see scales like that on Case knife boards in hardware stores. Seldom be on what they had in stock at that time. Stags in the '60s were rare as hen's teeth until the 10 dot set.

Anyway, here's a pretty 62048 with those scales you'd only see on the knife boards.

That’s a beauty!

No doubt Case selected some of the best looking knives for display boards. Who would put ugly ones on them? I didn’t start paying much attention to knives until the latter 1960s but at that time I found plenty of great looking knives in dealers stock. For sure not all of the inventory looked as good as the display knives, but there were plenty that did and some that were better, at least in my opinion.

During the 60s and 70s Case couldn’t keep up with demand. Dealers placed orders and (at least based on what they consistently told me) they didn’t know when their orders would be filled. Often I would visit dealers whose Case stocks were very low and they didn’t know when they would receive a shipment, nor what would be in it. It was common for orders to be only partially filled, with the remainder back ordered. Stag was typically scarce, always a premium handle material, and was priced accordingly. Some dealers sold what stags they had off the display boards, believing they would never get any replenishment inventory. Sometimes they were right.

Here are two from the Case XX pile that have pretty bone in my opinion. The little (62)25 1/2 has beautiful typical dark bone while the 6165SAB has a red tint to its' handles.

My XX era 6207s have Greenbone and Red Bone (which I think is very pretty, but I don't think it's called "Pretty Bone")

And my USA era 6207 Mini Trappers also have very pretty bone (although I think it's still considered Red Bone)
