Letter Openers
Some time back i was interested in Moore Maker letter openers. The ones i brought all had cracked bone scales, so what could i do but send them to Herman Williams to cover with some more interesting materials. I think he did a great job. The Case is as i brought it.

Re: Letter Openers
I will admit I never knew that Case made letter openers and Matador, TX where the others were made is only 3 hours west of me. Thoses openers are beautiful and I have thought a couple of times about adding some to my collection. Thanks for showing them!Schradenut wrote:Some time back i was interested in Moore Maker letter openers. My thoughts are that they were made by Moore Maker at their plant in Matador, Texas. Canal Street made knives for them, but i don't think they made these ones.

Tell you what guys, I'm going to find some time and drive over there to see who does what. It's only 3 hours west of me and besides I think there are some antique stores along the way.

UPDATE: I just got off the phone with the fine folks at Moore Maker INC. They said anytime I was passing through Matador be sure to stop in, I'm checking my calendar and making my plans now.

Re: Letter Openers
You’ll enjoy the trip to Matador and seeing the small town, which is headquarters of the Matador Ranch. Like Guthrie is the headquarters of the 6666 Ranch, most of the town is part of, or supports, the ranch. (Stop in Guthrie on your way. The ranch store is open to the public.). You’ll also enjoy your visit with the Moore’s but they don’t make knives there, just some ranching tools (like cattle de-horners). But there is a great inventory of knives - when I was there they had at least one of every knife they ever sold.
Pretty sure the letter openers were made by Queen but other suppliers making knives for Moore Maker have included Utica, Bear & Sons, among others including the aforementioned Canal Street. Not sure who make the letter openers now or if they even still offer them.

Re: Letter Openers
Don't really "collect" these but I'll pick one up if I see one and it's interesting. The top is an "I.K.Co."- stamped Imperial probably from the 40's-50's.
Middle one is unmarked but coincidentally from John S.Hyde stone and gravel in Westminster, MD in whose quarry I used to fish years ago. Can't remember where I got it but its was many years later. The bottom one is unmarked but is forged like a dagger. "Wilmington,(DE) Trust Co. 50th anniversary, November 18,1953" . Just a fun side bar to my knives. J.O'.

Re: Letter Openers
Here is a letter opener that you won't see too often. It is from the 1930's. The name on it is "Fritz Kuhn." On March 19, 1936, Kuhn became the leader of the German-American Bund. Which was formerly, "Freunde des neuen Deutschland" or Friends Of The New Germany, located in the United States and based in New York. He staged the huge pro-American rally at Madison Square Garden in New York City. There is plenty of information about the Friends Of The New Germany, the German-American Bund and Fritz Kuhn, on the net. The opener is entirely non magnetic. There is a very slight chance that it might be silver, but I can not find any markings. It measures approx. 8 1/2" long and was made in Cincinnati, Ohio. I obtained this in the early 1990's.
