help with this item

i have this what seems to be handmade dagger I don't know what the wood is my dad got this about 40 years ago his nephew gave it to him and any ideas will gladly appericate

It looks like a low quality tourist item from northern Africa or the middle east.

Tourist knives have an odd charm all their own. You just have to realize what they are and what they are not.

I wasn't saying it was anything I don't want to sell it or trade I was looking for some info on it but I see everyone thinks I am asking for some gain just wanting help it was my dads nobody here on this forum has enough money to get it

Hey June06, folks are pretty plain spoken here but not meaning to be offensive. I don't know that there is a lot to know about the knife, probably a tourist item. Hopefully your not offended. Sometimes with old knives about all there is to know is what you see and though those knives don't have a pedigree they can still be interesting and even meaningful to the owner, especial if it comes from a family member. I used to live in South America and was amazed at some of the things made with the most rudimentary tools. They were a work of art considering the things the maker had at his disposal. Enjoy you knife for what it is and for what it represents to you. We're glad you're here and hope you stick around.

I don't know if anyone here is a 'specialist' in knives from Middle East and Africa. Hence information like 'where in the world' ?, specific to a certain ethnic group ?, symbolism of markings ?, etc. is unlikely to be forthcoming.
Knives from that part of the world are quite a specialized sub section of knife collecting and a very broad field of knowledge as well.

Well, I know one thing - it’s a cool looking knife and somebody spent some time on it. Also, at over forty years old, it’s got enough age on it for someone like me to find it interesting just because it’s been places and done things.

If you took my post the wrong way I was not trying to offend you. Actually the opposite.

I like your knife and was trying to be positive about it. Even though I have no real knowledge to share with you about it. It is part of your family’s history and priceless because of it.

Although it is similar to some African daggers I own I also think it may be of Middle Eastern origin;although most I have observed have curved blades.Knives of this type can be really hard to categorize.Here are a couple of African daggers I acquired many years ago.What I noticed mostly about these was that they must have been made for very small hands as I can only grip them with about three fingers and the point on the pommel is another intriguing aspect.
