NICE ! Thats what I like about the Lansky ... I get an edge that I know I could never get by freehanding it.cbnutt wrote:Just got the Lansky , really worked great , I I got a old XX case 6318 from a forum member here the other day , great shape with full blades, but looked like some one had chopped wire, never sharpened it , went extra coarse to very fine , then went on some leather , it shaves , best ive ever done with a knife ,I was just average with free handing it before the Lansky , iam guessing if the blade had been in good shape to stat with , the med . stone would have been where to start .

Another vote for Lansky. Takes some of my 'human error' out of the equation .
I have the three stone diamond set, and added the extra coarse and ceramic.
I recommend leaving the rods in each stone and extra rods when you add stones.
Put the rod in the stone but don't tighten the screw. Lay the stone face down on a flat surface.
Center the rod to the stone along its length and gently tighten the screw.
The end of the rod will probably be off the table. Gently bend the rod
until the stone and rod are flat and square to each other.
Snug up the screw but don't over-tighten ; you'll crack the plastic !!
Remember; the art of sharpening any cutting edge is about the consistency of the angle.

Re: Lansky or Work Sharp ?
I use - and swear by - the 6" Lansky tri-hone. Never used a Work Sharp, either powered or manual (I assume the latter is just a few stones as well?).
I also have a small Case Arkansas stone that I use "on the go."
I am interested in giving the Spyderco Sharpmaker system a go to see which makes it easier to keep a good and proper bevel on my knives, but the Lansky fits how I've done it for years already.

Everything's better with a Barlow
