Canal Street Trapper

Post by just bob »

Did Canal Street make this Rigid knife? I see there is an almost identical knife on Google with a blade etch for a gun show or gun collectors club.

Aren't all Rigid knives made in Japan?

No. Some were made in China and some were made in the USA.

Bob, Canal Street did make a series of knives for the Rigid brand. Below is a link to a thread here on AAPK where they are shown and discussed. I do not know with absolute certainty that Canal Street did not make the knife you have shown, but I do have my doubts.

I have no clue who made this knife, but it resembles Bear and Sons to me.

Typically Bear & Son don’t use pins to hold their scales on, just the spring pin is used. The large end bolster looks similar to CSC’s moon trapper.

This may be what it is. but still don't know who made it. I was kind of liking Bear & son, but did they ever make a Rigid knife?

This is the same knife on ebay. Does the fact that it is from the 1980's have something to do with who made it? Canal Street can be eliminated - no?

Canal Street was in business from 2005 to 2015.

Thanks for the reminder. I knew this at one time, apparently forgotten, like a lot of things these days.

That's not a Canal Street knife, the ones made by Canal Street for Rigid were all amber stag bone with threaded bolsters. I believe the tang stamp is different as well.

I was out today and was thinking that since this was made in the 1980's that Queen may have made it? Didn't they do a lot of contract work? Also as we have established this is not a Canal Street maybe a mod could move this post to knife q and a so there could be more discussion on it. Thanks

As I previously posted, Camillus made some Rigid knives and used that tang stamp, BUT it just doesn't 'feel' like a Camillus knife but it does 'feel' like a Queen. (to me)

I don't have any inside information on that knife Bob, but I think it's a Schrade. The 4 1/4 inch Schrade trapper. I don't see a through pin in the bolster either, but that could just be the picture. If you have the knife in your hand see if you can find a pen in the bolsters. If there is no pen through the bolsters it is a Schrade.

Dale I think you are exactly right and this knife was made by Schrade and has Swinden pins. I don't see a hint of any pins in any of the bolsters. This must have been made 1970 - 87 when the trademark was owned by people in Lake Hamilton, Arkansas. The ebay auction called it an Arkansas Gaucho and was made in 1986 so that fits well. This may have been like Blue Grass Cutlery and they didn't actually make knives? I'm going to post this for the next guy looking for info on Rigid knives

RIGID... circa 1970-1987, in Lake Hamilton, Arkansas. Hunting knives and folding hunters. Trademark sold to SMKW in 1987. Appears that United may have acquired it from SMKW, and was offering some fairly nice knives under the brand.
