Caught Flat Footed by Ebay Seller
Caught Flat Footed by Ebay Seller
We've all seen ads of Ebay where the description doesn't match up with the knife. The main photo is this ad was a stag canoe, the other photos were of a stag trapper and the description was for the trapper. The asking price was very reasonable and had the 'make offer' option. I made an offer and asked which knife I was offering on. Almost immediately the offer was accepted. I checked what else he had for sale and sure enough, he had the canoe listed. The asking price was about $20 more than the trapper, but still one heck of a deal. I still wasn't sure what I had bought, but either knife was a bargain so I went ahead and paid. Next,I get an email form the seller asking which knife I want so I check his listings again. The canoe with the trapper description is in his sold section and now the canoe with the canoe description has had it's price changed to $700 dollars. This is when I notice the seller has less than 20 feedbacks. What the heck have I gotten myself involved in....what kind of bait and switch is this guy trying to pull. Now I get another Email from the seller, and this one simply amazes me. He says he raised the price on the canoe so no one would buy it until I decided which knife I wanted, or did I want them both. Wait a minute, no one is this considerate, especially no one with less than 20 feedbacks. I'm wondering what he's going to try and scalp me for on the second knife, so I went ahead and answered back that I'd take them both, if he would combine the shipping, and by the way, what was he asking for the canoe. When I got his reply, I just could not believe what I was reading...I mean, I was just plain caught flat footed. You won't believe it either.
I'm going to mail you both and when you get them, just send me a twenty dollar bill.. and then we will be even My address will be on the envelope. I have already deleted the other listing because I didn't want anyone to buy it when I am going to be sending it to you. Anyways, so sorry for the inconvenience.
Thanks

These days, an honest person will do that to you. So many shysters paddling around in the Bay, it's difficult to accept that there are a few people left in this world that are straight up.dweb1897 wrote:

This has to be the weirdest eBay story I've ever heard. I've been on eBay for at least 15 years and have stories, but this one takes the cake. So let me get this straight: this guy sent you both knives without paying? And he's going to trust you to pay once you get them?

Re: Caught Flat Footed by Ebay Seller
I could see that happening right here between 2 known AAPK members but not on eBay. Something still doesn't sound right about that transaction. I'm just not that optimistic about eBay sellers. I've sent out knives to AAPK members before I received payment but that's because it was a known member in good standing. I don't think the 2 people in the OP know each other and that's why I'm cautious of that story.jerryd6818 wrote:Sound like an AAPK member to you????

Re: Caught Flat Footed by Ebay Seller
Mike, though not well made, my point was we are lucky to have a place like AAPK where (most of the time) a man's word is his bond. There are a lot of us still out there, even on eBay. I understand why you are trepidatious about believing in an old time deal like that on eBay but as difficult as it is in this day and age, have a little faith. There are still plenty of "good folks" wandering around our planet and a few of them even inhabit eBay.
Keep us posted Doug because I think you're going to come out okay on this.

Re: Caught Flat Footed by Ebay Seller
He wrote that he went ahead and paid for one and asked for more information. Now the seller is sending the other one and he is to see send a $20 bill. Sounds great to me. A friend sold a fishing lure/item to a person in Japan. He opened a envelope in front of me and pulled out over $100 U.S dollars cash and put it in his pocket and threw away the envelope. That is what I call trust.
Re: Caught Flat Footed by Ebay Seller
It is odd but occasionally things like this happen.
About 10 years ago I bought an amp on eBay and before the guy shipped it he asked if I was interested in a similar one and I said yes.
So he packed them both together and said send payment for the second amp after I checked them out.
It is nice when we can trust each other.

Re: Caught Flat Footed by Ebay Seller
I had a famous CASE dealer I barely knew send me a $5000 CASE 10 dot Cheetah super rare prototype via USPS, no insurance and no signature prior to me sending payment. My check was already in the mail but still. He got wonky on 2 other occasions and did not follow through on his word so we do not do business anymore. For the record, I am not referring to Steve as he is a pleasure to do business with. Done several transactions with Steve and we were both happy.
Old school trust. I also saw a post here on one knife I was missing to complete my sub collection of CASE Swing guards from XX era to 1981’ when they were discontinued. A USA error extra 1 factory error 61111-1/2L. I emailed the man, a retired Long Beach LEO. We chatted via phone. He had no decedents to give the knife to. I shared my story and collection pictures with him. He says, I tell you what, I will send knife and if you like it send me a check. If you don’t like it return it. We are taking about a 700 dollar knife. Sent him a check.
I always ship prior to payment to members. If I have to worry about someone screwing me over a knife, something in life is lost for me.
Although far and few between these days, there are still good old school people out there as is evidence by all the great friends I have met here on the forum.
Regards, Jerry

Re: Caught Flat Footed by Ebay Seller
I paid for the first one that I made an offer on. The main pic was a canoe but the description was for a trapper. He's sending both knives and is trusting me to send him $20 for the 2nd one. Since he's violating Ebay's selling policy, I didn't want to get too specific. I'm getting a Schrade and a Queen, both in stag..and am only in to this deal for $30 plus shipping. I've got a tracking #, so something is headed to me in the mail.XX Case XX wrote:This has to be the weirdest eBay story I've ever heard. Re: Caught Flat Footed by Ebay Seller
When I first started collecting, I was corresponding with a collector down south. I had asked about several knives he had for sale. He put them all in a box along with a price list and sent them to me on his dime. Told me to pick out what I wanted and to send check, along with rest of the knives, back on my dime. For me, that was an early introduction to the type of people that you run in to in this hobby. I have no idea who this person on Ebay is. After checking out the paypal details, I think I'm dealing with a woman. I really believe that whoever it is, they're just a straight up honest and generous person. I'll let you know when the package shows up next week.

Re: Caught Flat Footed by Ebay Seller
About 5 years ago I bought a record turntable on eBay for $310 (we spin vinyl at my house). I asked how much the shipping was, I knew it would be high because it was quite heavy. Two or three days later he gets back to me and says $25 to ship, I pay him right then and about 2 hours later the turntable shows up. Obviously he shipped it right at the end of the auction. I'll never know if he was trusting, stupid or just not thinking.

These stories remind me of my time collecting sports cards in the early 1980s. There was only a couple of trade magazines for sports collectibles at the time (that I knew of), and dealers ran ads in the back pages. You could mail the dealer what you wanted, and they would just send you the cards with a note of how much they wanted for them. Then you could either mail the money to them or send the cards back. I've had dealers send me 50 to 100 dollars worth of cards (which was a lot of money to me then) and trust me to do the right thing. I miss those times.

Re: Caught Flat Footed by Ebay Seller
Schrade made very few knives with stag handles and none were regular run releases. This makes a stag Schrade folder uncommon and prices higher. Please post pictures when you have the knives. If they are the Real McCoy, i think you should send him more like $50. Then you would be paying an average of $35 per knife which is still a very good deal for a stag Schrade & stag Queen if condition is decent.
I try to treat everyone with with honesty whether known like here or not known as on ebay, makes no difference. I know there are others out there who do the same. Hence i believe this fellow is honest. We will know soon.

Re: Caught Flat Footed by Ebay Seller
Now that is a cool eBay story - as alluded to above despite the many "raw" sellers on eBay there are guys who truly are nice and fair people ... sometimes corresponding with sellers about the Knife (or whatever) prior to auction end can be quite telling... For example I have been outright lied to which one would never know until knife was received - or I have asked for extra photos in some cases in which the seller's reply was simply "no extra photos available" or sometimes I get a "lecture" as to knife condition or something like the knife is old so what do you expect - so many other examples but I'll leave it here ... but I have had seller's who were not knife people who so much appreciated me giving them some background etc on a maker or knife pattern (especially when the listing description is wrong) or explaining to them what snap is etc when they asked for an explanation that some have sent me a offer out of the blue to buy the knife at a very low price just in appreciation of me being helpful and without me even asking for a good offer (and some of those have been real nice offers for sure)... Truth is "generalizations" about anything (in this case eBay sellers) are just that - generalizations - and so this one case sort of renews faith
I have a good feeling that this one will end up having a good ending ... Look forward to hearing the outcome....

Re: Caught Flat Footed by Ebay Seller
somewhat similar, I had been trying to find a decent Moore Maker mountain man in smooth yella. Now a lot of the most recent Queen editions had some sticky locks on them. I've received 2 such knifes from ebay this year. I've also seen a few listed that included lock issues noted in the description. Anyhow, I received yet another with a less than perfect lock and already long story short the guy sent me 2 knives in lieu of me returning the 'bad' one. Told me to pick the one I wanted, send the others back. I thought that was about as fair as it could get. I'm knockin on wood here but I haven't been flat out snookered ever on ebay.

Re: Caught Flat Footed by Ebay Seller
The knives arrived today. I paid $33.75 thru PP and I owe the seller a $20. A Queen and a Schrade in stag for $53.75 all in. I still can't believe it and the seller only had 18 feedbacks. Knife collecting has introduced me to some of the finest folks around.

Those are great looking knives at that price for sure.
Are you sure that second one is a canoe? It doesn't show the raised bolsters at each end normally associated with the canoe frame.

Re: Caught Flat Footed by Ebay Seller
The 1982 Schrade NKCA Trapper all have very good stag but this one has about The Best stag i have seen on this knife.
And both are mint, easily worth $50 each. I would not feel right about only paying him the $20 he is asking, but most people likely would say "A deal is a deal" and that's it.

Re: Caught Flat Footed by Ebay Seller
I think the guy I'm currently dealing with must be the one tasked with balancing the cosmic karma scales that were knocked off-kilter by your guy,,,
Auction closed on 6/23. Payment made on 6/23. No communication from seller, no tracking number posted to ebay. On 7/2 I sent a message to the seller asking if the item had shipped & if it had, if he had a tracking number as I had not received the item. No reply from seller. Today (7/5), I got an email from ebay saying the item had shipped and the tracking number. I checked the tracking number, and it says the label was printed, but the item is not yet at the facility. Still no reply to my messages.
So, I suspect the guy completely forgot about this auction, and went on a trip. He got back home today, saw my message and went "oh, cr@p" and printed the label. I would actually be fine with that - if he had just messaged me. What I can't abide is the silence. There's just no excuse for that.

Re: Caught Flat Footed by Ebay Seller
I sell on eBay a lot. I have trusted people like this who bought knives from me too. When you interact w/ people who have a question, you get feel for the kind of person you are dealing w/. I have met some really nice people out there. One buyer and I have become friends. We talk on the phone, and I send him pictures of my latest purchase and he does the same. I sent him two knives that I was not allowed to sell on eBay, one was a butterfly knife and the other a gravity knife. I didn’t know what to ask for them so I said I will send them to you and you can decide if you want them and how much they are worth to you. It worked out well for both of us. I have included free knives in orders to say thank you for multiple purchases and held peoples purchases for as long as they ask because they are watching another knife that goes off auction in a week. You get reminder notices from eBay that you haven’t shipped this item yet and it’s a little troubling, cause you don’t want to hurt your status w/ eBay. But we bend over backwards to help folks.
Knife collector folks are the best folks in the world. I would rather trust my instincts and treat people as honest when they come across that way and not assume I am being conned everytime.
