Worse Than The Dollar Bucket At The Flea Market

Post by jerryd6818 »

This is a Camillus 72 clone made for Montgomery Wards by Schrade? Camillus? Imperial? I feel pretty confident in saying the handles are not bone.
Do you think there was a bench grinder in the picture at some time or another? ::dang::

I can’t tell if somebody really loved that knife, or really hated it. Man that’s rougher ‘n double dose of Black Draught.

Here's another one. If this guy doesn't quit listing this knife I'm going to scream. Please just give it a decent burial.

I was in an antique store recently where I saw a small box with about 15 knives in it, under a locked glass counter top display. I got the proprietor to open the case. She wanted $10 each for the knives, and not a single knife was as good as the OP knife in this thread - most were so rusted they couldn't be opened. What mess of junk! I advised the shop owner that if she put a drop of oil on the joints and let it soak in a while they might be able to get the blades open. She said she didn't have any oil. ::facepalm::

To this day I have never figured out why somebody would put a knife to a grinder. ::shrug::

In the 1960's When Bill F. worked for my dad he did that. Then put spit on his arm and shave hair off and put it in his pocket.

I don't have a good photo of this knife, so I cropped this out of a larger pic.

I place this knife in the center of my display table and surprisingly, it attracts a good deal of attention.

I like to think somebody liked the knife so much, they just used it as long as they could.

It's definitely been on a grinder.

In all honesty, my father would have said that knife still had a lot of miles available. And he would have kept using it. He never put a grinder to any knife (free hand oil stone sharpening only) but he would milk a knife forever. Frugal German or cheap Wend - pick your label.

The only use I see for that knife would be to pop the shield out of it for use in replacing a missing shield in a good knife.

This is Mr Charlie's knife I bought it at his estate sale.l think l gave a quarter for it. I just wanted something of his.l doubt he ever had any power tools, but he had some files and probably a old grinding wheel or two. He was a fine neighbor, and as good a finish carpenter and cabinet maker as there was. Looks like only one blade was used very much, it pretty well wore out but it will still cut. Just dawned on me but I've had this knife for forty or forty five years . Wow I'm getting old.

I'm going to buck the trend here and not panic when I see an old wore out knife. I would venture to guess that the owner probably either lived during the depression or had parents or relatives during that time. People in those times didn't have money to buy new knives and used what they had available to fix things. I agree that a bench grinder should never be used. But I see a story in each and every one of those ole worn out knives. some of the owners had a little more skill than others in sharpening however. JMO ::handshake:: Terry

That is what I always think. Don't throw it away but use it up. It is just a tool to those old folks. I kinda like them. Most of my grand fathers hoes looked like that as they were often introduced to the file in his back pocket. ::tu::
