Turned 69 last August. I started "Full Time Collecting" in the mid 1980's when I was in my mid to late 30's.
Since joining AAPK in July 2016 my knife expense has astonishingly grown, but so has my collection, cutlery knowledge, and friendship.

With a purpose? Just recently - within the last year or so - although I might also claim that I still don't have "a purpose". I have always owned at least a couple of pocket knives since I was a kid.espn77 wrote:One question I'd like to know. At what age did we actually start collecting? Actually collecting with a purpose?

Re: How Old Are You?
I just turned 70 and have been collecting for about 20 years. I collect newer Case, most Bulldogs and GEC but carry Spyderco lock-backs.

Re: How Old Are You?
I'm two clicks over the 70 mark not sure how I got here so fast. I do like the vintage stuff.
Honey do you have your pocket knife ? Do I have my pants on?
Re: How Old Are You?
53 - always had a handful of knives that I carried. Never really got into it though until I turned 50 - discovered eBay is fantastic way to get exposure to knife collecting & was far better than the SMKW catalog (which was my only previous exposure & where I got the few knives I started out with years ago).
pffffft that's not a knife ......... now THAT'S a knife !! Crocodile Dundee

I'm 62 and have been accumulating pocketknives, bayonets, and fixed blade hunting knives since I was a boy of 8 or so. I became a real "collector" in 2005 when I lost my 18 year old Schrade 108OT and discovered the new ones were coming from China - I started visiting gunshops, gunshows, pawnshops, thrift malls, and hardware stores - hoarding up all I could find of the USA made models. Then I got going collecting my long time favorite brand, Buck Knife. It's been downhill ever since! OHespn77 wrote:One question I'd like to know. At what age did we actually start collecting? Digger! Good to "see" ya mate.
I'm currently 73 and have had a love affair with guns and knives my entire life. Though the passion simmered deep in my soul, I was just a user for about the first half of my life. It was a Randall that lit the fire under my boiler. I had coveted one of that brand since I had a brush with it in Viet Nam. A couple of guys in my hooch had 'em and man oh man, were they ever slick. So in the late 70's I saw one in a local gun shop and I scratched the itch. At first it was a fixed blade now and then and the folders were still just users. Then in the late 90's or early 2000's I discovered the SMKW catalog and doctor's knives and the die was cast. The accumulator seed was planted but the passion was still at a slow simmer until I joined AAPK. Once I got in with you hooligans in 2009, the lid blew off the pot and it's been Katie bar the door ever since. I'm probably only about 30% collector, the other 70% is accumulator/hoarder.

Re: How Old Are You?
I'm 69, and have carried/collected pocket knives all my life. In recent years I buy quality knives new and old, now that I can afford them. When I was in the Navy I bought a Buck 110 and used it extensively, being a snipe I used it in my work in the engine room. I now carry a Case yellow Trapperlock, helps with my arithtic fingers. Here's to a great site and (old) friends. ftd

Re: How Old Are You?
Your guys response is interesting. It appears as tho most people start collecting after age 40. Life slows down, finances get in a better place (kids move out). I've always liked knives, always kept what I had. Wasn't until about age 35 that my father in law started taking me to gun shows with him. Couldn't afford to buy guns so I started buying knives. At that time little did I know how much could be invested into a knife collection. At 40 now I'm excited that I can hopefully have 40 years of collecting ahead of me.

Re: How Old Are You?
I'm a "serial hobbyist", and have been all my life - I have had numerous passions over the years including:
Lionel Prewar & Postwar Model Trains
US Silver Coins
Firearms
Audiophile Headphones
R/C Cars
Model Rockets
Folding Knives
and others...
None are big, serious collections - all are small time - and my interest in each has risen & fallen several times over the years. Some I have not participated in for many years. Sometimes I think it is the *learning* that I like most. And, when I reach a plateau in funds, or knowledge, or time, or space, etc, my interest tends to wane for a while.
