Grandfather’s Collection Knife of the Day
I have recently inherited my grandfather’s collection of pocket knives and am opening up a discussion with AAPK members to learn as much as I can about each one. I dont have much information about each knife, but am intersted in a collector’s assessment of condition, rarity, value, etc. He was a meticulous about keeping knives in near mint condition, but knife history unfortunately passed with him.
I’ll be posting a knife every day or two for the next 2 months. Look forward to everyone’s replies!
Today’s knife of the day is attached!

Welcome to the forum.
Case collectors will post but I can tell you (I'm not a case collector) that your knife was made 1965-69. It looks to be in mint condition and although I can't place a value on it, because of its condition, it's worth a premium.

And he did keep them in great condition. Lucky you. Knives are best that have a history.

Welcome to AAPK! This is going to be interesting, seeing all the knives you have to show off. He picked some winners judging by the first one pictured.

Re: Grandfather’s Collection Knife of the Day
Welcome to AAPK. Condolences for your grandfather. Beautiful knife and nice pictures. The 65 is one of Case’s most popular patterns. The Case XX USA mark was used from 1965 - 1969 as mentioned earlier, however I believe the 5165 (stag handles) was made in !965 only.
If your newly inherited collection of knives is all, or mostly, Case knives then you might want to consider acquiring Steve Pfeiffer’s book titled Collecting Case Knives. It describes each pattern and provides estimation of values. Only you can estimate the sentimental value of your knives, which likely exceeds the market value.
I’m looking forward to seeing pictures of your other knives.
You might want to clarify what you intend to do with your knives (retain or sell) in case you might be looking for offers or don’t want to receive offers.

Re: Grandfather’s Collection Knife of the Day
Thanks for everyone’s interest and valuable feedback!
The collection was a mix of American hunter classics.
Initially, I want to get as much information about each knife as possible, ideally from more knowledgeable and engaged collectors than myself. Later on, I may decide to sell a few and reduce the size of the collection for ease of care and maintenance.

Hugh, Sorry about the passing of your Grandfather. The 65 pattern Case knife pictured is nice. The book would be a valuable tool even if you don't sell any of the knives.

Thank you for the condolenses, however I probably should have clarified - my grandfather passed some time ago, but now they knives are in my posession, still a pleasant memory of him sharing the collection with me as a youngster.

Nice initial knife and looking forward to seeing more; meanwhile... The Revenant is a pretty entertaining and well-done film, although it is TOTALLY fictional in regard to the Hugh Glass incident. Welcome to AAPK!Tony_Wood wrote:Hugh, I am new here as well, but will say welcome.

Re: Grandfather’s Collection Knife of the Day
Agreed. I first read of Hugh Glass in “The Mountain Men” by George Laycock. The incident happened, most of the movie was fictional.tongueriver wrote:Nice initial knife and looking forward to seeing more; meanwhile... No issue with the Hugh Glass commentary, although I have been paying homage to the National Hugh Glass monument in Shadehill, SD every couple of years long before the Revenant was a even a “thing.”

In keeping with the Case trend, today’s post is another folding hunter. I believe the handle is green bone but no numbers for ID.

A very nice 61050SAB from the tested era Hugh. That would be 1920-39. A highly desirable and sought after knife.

Re: Grandfather’s Collection Knife of the Day
Hugh, your 2nd knife is a green bone Case Tested XX C61050 coke bottle pattern. It has a raised letter bowtie shield (super desirable) that shows no pocket wear. The handles also don't show any wear. The blade and the mark also look to be in fabulous condition. If the remainder of the knives are comparable in age and condition, your grandfather has left you an extraordinary collection.
This cokebottle is a superb collectible.

Great knife. Well since no one else is answering your question as to value...Hugh_Glass wrote:In keeping with the Case trend, today’s post is another folding hunter. I believe the handle is green bone but no numbers for ID.

That is a $1500 knife in my opinion. $1000 at the least. Book value says $1000 but on some knives, I throw the book out the window and that knife is one of them. They are not necessarily an uncommon knife, but in that condition I would say rare if that knife has not been professionally cleaned and stone mint as it appears to be. Likely 80 or 90 years old. Don't let someone low ball you on that one if you sell it.
Was your Grandfather a CASE brand only collector?
The USA Hunter is likely a $300 to $400 knife. Great example.
My 1500 cents...
