ORIGINAL REMINGTON R4466
ORIGINAL REMINGTON R4466
With the internet and how people who don't even know anything about knives can come across a rare knife and sell it on the bay. Ive never seen a 4466 for sale, never seen one posted on here either. Has anyone ever seen one other than in a book? Did they only make very few of them? For me and my work the 4466 is the perfect carry knife and I carry the 1988 model. Any info on this knife I would appreciate.
thanks Keith

Re: ORIGINAL REMINGTON R4466
Keith, I opened this expecting to see a mint example in a period appropriate display case with all of the other vintage bullet patterns (lol). I have been on a quest for a few years to collect the entire set of the Bullet patterns. I am missing the R4466 and the R1173. In 5+ years of watching, I have seen one R4466 sell on eBay. Pictures are below (not my knife; not my pictures). I did not bid because I am holding out for one in a little better condition (yeah right - one will come along any day now ) I have missed a couple of good R1173's and am more confident in locating one of these.
Apologies if you already have the info I am sharing below.
Here is a link to AAPK's reference material for the vintage Bullet knives:
http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/rem ... ullets.php
I also provided some scans from Mel Brewster's book "Remington Bullet Knives". This book is out of print. On the R4466 page I scanned, you will see that Mel says that he only saw one of these. From how I read Mel's description of the R1613BL, he says one of these with the Bullet shield (vs. the round shield) would be very rare, if authentic. I did manage to find a R1613BL with the Bullet shield. The shield is pinned on as it should be so I believe my knife is authentic.

Re: ORIGINAL REMINGTON R4466
I've seen quite a few fake R4466 patterns but can't say I've ever seen a real one first hand. I've had and do have a nice R4353 pattern but never come close to a stag baby R4466.
Jerry do you remember what the eBay R4466 sold for? That knife looks pretty good to me.
I would think if a believable R4466 floated up in the bay it would bring some very impressive bidding.
Here is a post for a better fake R4466 that was discussed here back in 2014, scroll down to see it.

MrB, your beautiful knife is a R4353. The knife Keith is asking about has stag handles. See Mel Brewster's description below of the R4353:

Re: ORIGINAL REMINGTON R4466
Wayne, my recollection is that is sold for about $2,100. I agree it is a pretty nice example. Blades look full and there is a visible blade etch. My assessment was that it had seen a lot of pocket time, but not much cutting / use.btrwtr wrote:

Re: ORIGINAL REMINGTON R4466
I guess I know a few guys that have the 4353. The 4466 is pretty small. Or the repro is anyway. Why don't we ever see them? Thus has been a fun read for me.
Re: ORIGINAL REMINGTON R4466
I bought this poster from Mike, galvanic1882 the other day. I don't know why the knife isn't in it. The availability of records from Remington is minimal at best. Make my small mind think that there weren't very many made.

What a handsome poster!

Re: ORIGINAL REMINGTON R4466
The R4466 is one of those knives that seems to live on exclusively in fakes and repros. The fish knife seems to be another beast; I've never even seen one so I still say it's a myth, like unicorns and honest politicians.
Most of the R4466s I see are "across-the-room fakes", to quote another member, so I was a little excited about perhaps seeing a nice example under this thread. Maybe the challenge is for AAPK to flex its collective knife-hoarding power and find a genuine one. Then we make the thread sticky...

Re: ORIGINAL REMINGTON R4466
Tony, these pictures are for you
Two (2) examples of Remington Bullet R1613 BL fish knives - 1 with bullet shield (rare) and 1 with a round shield. And one (1) extremely rare honest politician No pictures of unicorns, however.
Re: the R4466... I did post pictures of one that I believe to be genuine that sold on eBay (not my knife; not my pictures). I would even go so far as to call it a nice example.

"Remington R4466 "bullet" LITTLE MUSKRAT or J pattern master blade is a clip with strong etch and lots of original lustre; spec blade in bottom bolster.PERFECT, dark, rich color GENUINE STAG handles.Blades are 100% full, clean, but never professionally cleaned.Hard snap.Considered to be one of the 5 rarest "bullets". I sold this knife to a collector 20 years ago and feel fortunate to have the opportunity to buy it back. NEAL MINT/MINT $3995"
This is from an old Joe Seale knife list front the fall of 2007.I have a stack of these I have kept to look back on from time to time.Joe is still typing these out on a type writer and copying and mailing out.
I don't know if a 4466 would still bring 4K or not.Joe usually doesn't have any bargains.

Re: ORIGINAL REMINGTON R4466
My picture taking skills are poor at best so I sent my R4466 to Jerry and he was kind enough to take some pictures for me. I thought I'd post the pictures for future discussion.

Re: ORIGINAL REMINGTON R4466
I'm grateful to Keith for letting me handle his R4466 while I took a few pictures. It's an extremely well made knife that's beautiful to look at and impressive knife to hold.
Another photo project that Keith and I worked on recently is a group photo of the original Remington Bullet knives. In our combined collections we are only missing the R1173 Baby Bullet. I'm sure Keith is very busy working his contacts trying to find one (lol).
The full size expanded picture is large so if you click on the picture it will be slow to download / display.

I sometimes feel like a minority around here but people like Jerry, Wayne, Roger, Rocky, Ray, Harald, Tom, Mike, have helped me in both my education and knife findings. I can't say thank You enough.
Hale to the Remington forum. Sorry. Just had to do that.
