Re: It's In The Mail
This is very, very, similar to the Spanish Navaja knife. Almost identical.

First of all, as a train nut since I was a kid, I really like that knife.TwoFlowersLuggage wrote:I just bought this engraved contract knife that is stamped "Hard Hat USA". I don't know who really made it - any guesses? I kind of liked the obscure engravings on it - who knew that there was an "American Train Dispatchers Association"?? I sure didn't!

Hard Hat has mainly been associated with Bear and Son for the most part. Other manufacturers as well, but most of those seem to have come from China.
Re: It's In The Mail
A knife I've wanted since I was just a young'un. I was 10 when I got into knives, and SMKW had just came out with two exclusive Victorinox models, the Master Gardener, and Master Electrician. I couldn't afford it back then (the $30 I spent on the Fieldmaster I bought locally back then was a big amount of money to a ten year old). A couple of years back (by then a decade later), I got serious into SAKs and couldn't find this one for a reasonable sum. Just in the past couple of hours ago, one of our members listed the Master Gardener model on the AAPK store for $65, which is a lot less than most have been listed for.

Re: It's In The Mail
Those NF #43s got their hooks into me. I was hoping to get away with just the Tidioute Frontier Bone, but you know what they say about the best-laid plans of mice & men...
So these two are on the way (dealer photos):
The orange camel bone knife pictured is the exact knife I'll be receiving, per KSF.

I just couldn't resist this Whiskey Bone barehead Tribal lock with CV blade. Even comes with a free Case XX T-shirt.

Thanks Phillip ! That's a little different from the others I have. First CV blade I've seen on one that wasn't yellow or purple.

Two reserved knives and an impulse buy. So far I have successfully resisted the CV Tribal Lock, though it matches my orange camel bone #43 so nicely...
Time to dial it back for a while.

Re: It's In The Mail
Thanks! As a huge fan of the Barlows, I was all over the new NF 77s and when I managed to secure two lottery reservations I was beyond happy. As for the big trapper, I couldn't help myself when I saw it come up on the dealer site. There are also a couple red pickbone "Scout Trappers" (3.75" long closed). All GECs (commissioned by Taylor, I believe) from 2007, serialized. This one is the "Pioneer Trapper" (4.5" long closed) based on the #23 frame which means it'll be my first of that pattern. The big trapper allegedly has a monster pull (8/10 on both blades). I really dig the houndstooth "Schrade"-stamped shield, too. I don't know if any Pioneers remain, but if you want an older GEC for under $90 the Scout Trappers are on CollectorKnives right now.

The Schrade marked trappers by GEC are great knives, of course. Here is a quiz. Do you remember what the other two 'Schrade' marked knives are that GEC made?

Re: It's In The Mail
I finally got to the point where I could more or less suss out the "other" post-closure Schrades (Camillus, Utica, Bear & Son) but as for the GECs these are the first I've seen. I didn't look further into the Scout Trappers, either - I'm wondering if they're built on the #73 pattern which is a stout medium trapper and the one I've handled had a similar blade profile to the master on the Scout Trapper.tongueriver wrote:The Schrade marked trappers by GEC are great knives, of course. Apparently this is how I "dial it back"... These will soon be on the way to the sunny southeast.
Thanks to Gino for making me an offer I couldn't refuse.

Re: It's In The Mail
I just snagged this one off the bay, CASE XX USA (no dots) 62048. Put a bid on it last night and forgot about it until the notification came through that I had won it this morning. Guess since no one else wanted it that means I paid too much. Oh well, I'm a sucker for a HOK, they're my favorites.

I swear, I was finally going to dial it back but the dealer scrounged up an extra. Thanks for the pointer (and the bad influence), Bruno!

Re: It's In The Mail
I spotted this little dogleg scrolling across the top of AAPK tonight and the price was right for a Boker USA in a pattern I do not have - a 9903 (with a 2-piece half-dozen count box and paperwork to boot). So it's on the way here.
I may really have a problem... I think I need a moratorium on buying knives for a while.

Hey Tsar, nice Boker; that scrolling top will get you occasionally (gets me too!) Just bought this Case 6375 from Steve P. that I saw scroll across a few days ago. OH
