Ulster 10th Mtn. Div. Knife
This knife arrived today and I'm reasonably certain it's an Ulster 10th Mtn. Div. knife. If there are any issues please feel free to say so. Seller on eBay had it listed as "Old Knife". Knife really has some great patina to it.

Definitely, a WWII 10th Mountain Division knife.
BUT, these were also issued to the U.S./Canadian combined unit, The First Special Services Force, sometimes referred to as The Devil's Brigade, and a fore-runner of the U.S. Army's Special Forces units of today.
I'd have to dig out my copy of Coles Book III to check, but I think it might be a second model. First model had the Phillips screw-driver mounted on the shackle and all the other vaiations have to do with master blade changes, I think.
Sweet knife and just full of history.

Charlie is correct....that is a Type 2, First Special Service Force knife, 10th Mountain Div..
Ulster made three styles or types of these knives.
The major differences are:
Type 1 had a round staple not marked "U.S."
Type 2 had a flat staple marked "U.S."
Type 3 had the Phillips head screwdriver on the end of the flat staple.
The one you have is a Type 2 in excellent condition.

Re: Ulster 10th Mtn. Div. Knife
Thanks guys for all the info. Certainly is a lot of history behind the 10th Mtn. Division. I took a chance when I bought it since there were limited pictures, but as soon as I saw US on the end of the bail I was reasonably certain it was the real thing.

I have a question on these types of knives. The one made without a bail is or is not a military issue? Seems to be debate on the subject? I'll save myself time taking pictures and post this link. Thanks for helping.

Re: Ulster 10th Mtn. Div. Knife
I have collected these for a long time and the ones without the bail are not military issue, I have seen no concrete evidence that they issued them without the bail. I have several without the bail that have the master blade etched " Abercrombie and Fitch" so I believe Ulster used up all the spare parts they had on hand after the end of the war to produce the ones they sold to Abercrombie and I have seen some made for Sears. After the 1950's this pattern disappeared completely from the Ulster line.
