The Unknown GEC is now Known!

Post by Forensic Jim »

The new pattern for GEC is a SUNFISH! The pattern number will be 362209 and it should be out before New Years Eve. It will have a closed length of 4 1/4" and have a large spear blade and a large pen blade. The large spear blade will have a thickness of .156". First off the line will be the Tidioute in Burnt Grizzly bone and then Frontier Bone. These will have crescent pulls and smooth bolsters. The Northfields will have the long pulls. ::ds::

If their other knives are any indication of how this one will be, GEC should consider including a set of vice grips with each knife to be used when opening the blades.

You said it Phil!

I split a finger nail opening the blades on my EDC 3 blade GEC Cuban. I had to literally open and close the blade I use most often 1,000 times, probably more, before I could open it with my finger nail alone. Before that I used an old fashioned knife blade opener.

And the Sunfish! AWESOME CHOICE!

Jim,

How about a hint as to the expected cost and a picture?

Haven't seen any pics yet or pricing. I might have to keep a few of them for myself, I like e-toes.

Well, I don't have any e-toes any more my last one went to my son, about a year ago. It's a Bulldog prototype that had cracked celluloid, so our own Colin Paterson did the fantastic scrimshaw work and mammoth ivory rehandling as well as the filework. Colin can be reached at http://www.patersoncustomknives.com an AAPK store. My son and I share the same initials - so that worked out just fine. BUT that was my last e-toe ::tear::

Click on the pictures and you can still see details in the scrimshaw art work even at 10 times the normal size.

Back to GEC and their sunfish or e-toe. I think it's an excellent pattern for them to make, I would like to see a single bladed toe or another exotic variation come out of the original frame.

Here is a link to the news release: http://www.greateasterncutlery.net/catalog2.html and they did an excellent job.

Many times I have complained about a lack of details as far as the knife specifications go, usually there is just a picture. Well this time they have no picture but I will commend them on their details with the knife specifications. They did a great job! I figure I owe them that after complaining about a lack of details or specifications on many releases. ::tu:: ::tu:: I'll have to pick one up in the summer!

Nice looking knife you have there Hukk. Beautiful scrimshaw job on the handles. Signing the handles is a must for the artist but I think I would have stopped him short of signing the blade though. JMO. None the less though still a great looking knife. ::tu::

I meant that I knew there was a new pattern, I rashly reserved a #2 in Grizzly for whatever it was.
I grew up in Titusville down the road from the Cyclops Steel Works facility.
My grand parents live virtually across the street from the GEC workshop and I took the tour recently.
My gamble was the reservation of the knife the jackpot is they design they chose

Well, Colin did the filework and rehandled in mammoth ivory also as well as the scrimshaw, so I'm OK with signing the blade. He used a Turbo - Carver for signing the blade. I believe that's the same tool that ol Mr. Buck uses. Those tools are so fast they scare me - sounds like a dentist drill (that's the sound that scares me  ). I have one, they can run up to 400,000 RPM. (YEP, that's four hundred thousand RPM - not a typo).

It was a gift to my son when he turned 18.
