Re: post apocalyptic knife
Sweet! Really makes me wish I lived and worked in an area where it was practical to EDC a fixed blade.
Take care and God bless,

That is very nice.
Do you have any pictures of the process you use to work the steel? I’d love to see those.

Sure. These aren't from the same billet but they pretty much sum up the process:

Thank you for the pics. I’m assuming you weld the chain up in the box and then cut the box away? I’ve seen videos on this and they are very interesting.hellize wrote:Thanks!Colonel26 wrote:That is very nice.

Do you hammer and fold by hand or do you use an auto hammer? I even saw one guy doing this with a hydraulic press.

I don't fold these at all, it would ruin the pattern.
Yes, I have an old hammer, which I use. No press unfortunately. Actually I think a press would be even better for making damascus, but it is way out of my reach.

The blade was around 18 cm long.
The core, hence the edge is 5160. It is a san mai.

As far as I know, often used steel from blacksmiths in the US. I wonder why? The composition is nothing special, and the carbon is only 0.6 ...hellize wrote:Eustace wrote: 5160.
On the other hand, here is a comparison of this steel with two others, widely used by blacksmiths in Bulgaria

It seems that the difference is not great.

It is often used because it is relatively easy to forge and forgeweld, both are very important. Most high end steels are a pain in the ass to forge and next to impossible to forgeweld, because of their small forgeable heat window. If you don't pay attention they break like glass if too hot or too cold. But 5160 is extremely forgivable, largely available and furthermore CHEAP!
