Can you use a metal stamp to mark your custom knives?

Post by Meridian_Mike »

Hello all,
I want to put a simple "MT" mark and a number on my hand-mades. Will a simple hand held metal stamp work for the high carbon steel blades or do I need some thing else?

Here is one I whipped out last weekend.

All I want to do is put my initials and a number.....

Any ideas?

I stamp all my custom made knives that I make with letter stamp set I got from Jantz Supply, you know the kind the comes in the little wooden box with individual A-Z. Recently I ordered A custom stamp for a company on ebay with my initials and usa underneath. I got tired on trying to keep the indivdual stamps straight so I ordered the custom one so it's just one strike and done. The custom one is made from A2 tool steel Rc62 or so. All my blades are stamped on annealed (still soft not heat treated) 1084 or 1095. Basically stamp BEFORE heat treat. I don't no of any stamps that will work on heat treated steel(harder than say 54Rc). The stamp has to be considerably harder that the steel.

Forgot to add. In your case I think etching would be your best bet. I think Jatnz sells a little etching kit.
