My First Slip Joint ... From Scratch

Post by Brumbydownunder »

My First Slip Joint From Scratch .... its taken a while and was a huge leap in skills from simply remaking/refurbishing old slip joints
3 7/8 Lanny's Clip 1095 Blade & Spring Bronze Bolsters Brass Liners & Pins Red Box Covers ... Still some final polishing to go ... but pretty pleased with how it's turned out :D

I'd say that's pretty darn good there Derek. And like you said, it's a big leap from simply refurbishing to making a knife from raw materials. Don't know how long that took but that's something to be proud of. Very proud... ::nod:: I'd like to see a few more pictures from different sides if you get the chance, especially the backsprings. It would be interesting to see how you fit all that together.

Congratulations! That knife has the appearance of being comfortable in the hand! Reminds me of a Case Saddlehorn pattern. Looks like it would be a great EDC. How long have you been working on it?

Well done, BDU. Compared to refurbishing an already-made slip joint, what would you say was the most difficult/challenging aspect of a complete fabrication from scratch?

Very nice looking work Derek! And if that's your workbench in the background, I have to say it's almost - but not quite - as messy as mine! ::facepalm::

That is a very handsome, and well designed knife sir. Would you call that a "Tear Drop" pattern?

Can't wait to see it dressed up, and finished!!! ::nod::

Thanks for all the words of encouragement folks. I looked back in my photo file and I started this knife in April ... it kept getting put in the "too hard" basket and I went onto other projects. I'll get some more glamour pics when I finish polishing etc.
#goldpan this was all done with basic hand tools

Mumbleypeg my bench sure gets messy but isn't a tidy bench a sign of an untidy mind?

QT getting the 'action' right both for fit and then the 'strength' of the spring on opening. It is still on the strong side maybe a 7/8 out of 10 but that may free up a tad with use.

That look wonderful! How did you accomplish the heat treat? Do you have a professional grinder?

Great work!

Wow Derek, that's really nice. You did a fine job Sir. I don't think I could draw that knife let alone make it from scratch. I especially like the indentations in the bolster, nice touch. And the handle pins are all perfectly round and flush with the scales. Everything fits nicely and the entire knife has clean lines. Very very nice work Sir. That is something you'll remember for the rest of your life.

Great work!
Heat Treat ?
Well ... this will probably raise a laugh or at least a few eyebrows. For heat treating I use a small potbelly ... once the flue and all the vents are open she gets pretty hot I hang the blades in there until they are red hot and keep testing with a magnet until the blade is un-magnetic Then a quick quench in Canola Oil. Later I temper the blade in the kitchen oven.
DSCN6118.jpg
And no professional grinder Glenn ... just a filing jig I made up initially to make fixed blades.
I'm very much "a make do with what I've got" type of guy

Very nice folder!
I am in the planning stage of making my first folder. I REALLY like your file guide.

How did you attach the file to the flat bar???
I think I see a small flat bar with 2 screws near the handle.... (same on the front?)

EXCELLENT work!

Mate, i am very impressed with your first endevour into knife making. The style is sensational, and would be very comfortable in the hand.

The good old Aussie Box timber scales look awesome...a great choice.

Where to from here, a fixed blade or a multi blade? Your fingers are really taking a hammering, and i love your bench. I bet you know where everything is. It seems to be the way with customisers.

A big thumbs up from me, my friend. ::tu:: ::tu:: ::ds::

The bar at the back fits around the tang of the file and is held by the two small bolts; at the front a small wedge holds it in place.
Mike I have PM'd you with additional info

Thanks Tony .... I did some fixed blades a year or so back ... as for multi blade .... I'm a bit daunted by that thought.
