Hello everyone! There was a knife listed here in the member store that really caught my eye, but I'm unsure if it is worth buying or not. I will go ahead and state that I am in no way claiming this seller is selling a counterfeit. I just don't have enough knowledge on case knives of this era to be sure and would truly appreciate any help on the subject matter :) The knife is a W R Case Jack knife. I've included a link below, thanks so much!

I compared a few pics on Google and I don’t like the bolsters.

A couple of reference books with pictures show this pattern with a clip and pen only and the clip blade is in the front. The listing says pre-1920, maybe Mr. Pfeiffer will come by with an explanation.

I agree, there are a couple of items that just don't look right, but I'll be the first to say I'm not a CASE expert so don't listen to me.
This is why I will never buy a CASE knife online unless the seller is a personal friend that I trust. Case knives are some of the most expensive, old or new, knives to buy and it would seem like the one that most unscrupulous sellers like to fake. Just my 10 cents worth, inflation you know.

I am also, by no means, a Case knife expert. I have seen a few of the older Case knives with bolsters like this one, which I think may be called "rat tail" or "pinched" bolsters (but I'm not sure). But, on page 20 of Tom McCandless's great book , first column, second row, I see a very similar 6202 W.R. Case & Sons knife. And, I own several W.R. Case's with "diamond" shields and they are not that uncommon. Hopefully, Tom or Steve or one of our other highly regarded Case experts will chime in. :D

It's an AAPK store. If fake we need to know.
I have no idea.

Yeah, I think Bryan weeds those out pretty quickly, if it isn't the real McCoy.

I believe it to be genuine, but would like to have sharper tang stamp photos for each blade.

It appears to be a very early one, possibly made by Utica on contract.

Many of the very early Case knives had features that were different from later knives in the Bradford/Tested/XX eras.

In its early days, Case was absorbing the knife patterns and tooling from Platts and Crandall, as well as developing the standard Case patterns in addition to outsourcing knives to other companies like Baldwin, Utica, and Napanoch.

I would tend to think the knife is authentic but it definitely was not made by Case. Knives with the round , not the Oval, Case Tested stamp were all contract knives. I would say Utica would be a good guess as Steve pointed out. W R Case never had the right to use the XX trademark until 1915 so the knife was definitely made after then.
I would have to have the knife in hand to make a positive determination. Even if authentic the fact that it is a later model and made on contract does in my experience affect the value.

Thanks Tom, the Made in USA on the tang is another clue that the knife is a contract knife.

So what is the return policy? I don’t see anything mentioned.

Good lookin' knife IMHO.

Like Steve and the boys said, she was a contract knife. Shield is the giveaway.
