Old Case Trapper
Old Case Trapper
Comments on this knife. Especially the tang areas. Does that look normal?

I should have said choil area and that word escaped me at the time .

Re: Old Case Trapper
Stamp looks to be authentic but located very high on the tang. If this is a factory error then fine but?????? Blade looks to new to be of the tested era but buffing can do wonders.
Re: Old Case Trapper
I am no Case expert, but AT BEST the knife has been heavily buffed. Someone tried to recut the tiny indentation at the choil (to give the illusion that the blade is a bit more full) and cut too much, too deep, and at the wrong angle.
The spey blade has heavy rust pitting near the spine that has been sanded and buffed. It looks like a blade that has been exposed to off-gassing. Since the master blade does not show that, I have to wonder if they came from the same knife.
Now, I hope that the real experts chime in and give more information.

Compare the choil on the spey blade to the one on the master OP.

I see nothing I like about the knife. Shield is wrong for a Tested trapper, pin placement is wrong, handles don’t look like Rogers to me, and yes the choil looks ground. I would give it a wide berth.

Re: Old Case Trapper
That OP knife is a mess of problems. The shield is from around the 1965-1980 era and does not appear to be properly inletted/set into the cover. The master blade tang has been “shaved” down, mass evidenced by the curved shoulder - it should be straight across. The curve is created by loss of metal when the original stamp is grinded off before it was re-stamped. Not sure what the handle covers are but that’s not Rogers bone. There are other problems as already pointed out.

I emailed him with my concerns and I got a snarky answer about it being in the family since the '40s.
Re: Old Case Trapper
You would never see a Tetsed knife with handles so poorly contoured to the liners and bolsters. A mess of problems for sure.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.
