Case tested? Surely this isn’t real.

Post by billysc22 »

I’m still pretty green when it comes to case prior to the 40s. What do y’all think of this? The bolster area looks good, but something seems odd.

Billysc22 you aren't all that green because you spotted this fake. Tell tale signs on this knife are the very round edges all over the blade. The kick on the blade tang looks terrible. Makes me wonder if it could be a good stamped tang with a welded on blade. The blade tip peeks when closed as well. Handle material isn't what I'd expect on a Case Tested knife either.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Did they make that handle color in that year? The handles look a lot like modern Amber Bone.

The blade tip peaking out was another thing I noticed. Ol buddy was trying to get 200 out of this thing. I hope nobody falls for it.

So someone started this with just a broken blade with a tested tang stamp, welded the blade and made the rest from later parts? WOW, what a way to make a living.

It's not a pattern that Case ever made. The blade looks too new, and the stamp looks new. Handles look like older Rogers bone.

You will occasionally see knives similar or identical to this one on Ebay but with the rarer CASE 25 Cents tang stamp. My guess is that someone fabricated a bunch of blades with fake old stamps and assembled a bunch of fake knives.

Looks like pretty much the same type bone as on this Pine Knot fake.

It does look like Rogers bone (like the more recent Case "Rogers style bone") but that color isn't like Tested era bone, at least none I've ever seen. Hard to tell for sure from the pictures but it looks to me like the handles are not fitted tight to the bolsters - there's a slight gap you won't see on a bone handled Case, from any era. Even on the fake Pine Knot that Charlie posted the bone is flush against the bolsters. JMO

I think we should all just agree it's a $10 knife with a $100 tang stamp... ::sotb::

Notice arched tang markings on 'Pine Not' knife. There is a guy faking knives who marks his knives with an arched stamping of one of the more uncommon knife brands. Always uses markings that are arched, not straight line. It's an 'Archie' knife.
