Many sellers use a red background. It was BRL who put forward the idea that red background = high chance of being fake.
Whatever the O.P. knife might be, the red background idea has little merit.

I am seeing 40 style shields on 1965 series knives, so were these shields interchangeable during some of this time? I know case would use up old stock when they had it, but why then were they using new styles on knives if they had old ones available, unless they just found a bunch. Or of course it could be a cobbled knife.

My only comment on the op is that the rear pin looks very strange. I've never seen one that pulled in. There is a good reason for a red background on ebay items. I have seen this before and it must be true?

Oh, it's not the color, itself. It's that particular seller, who frequently draws "red" flags from the AAPK community regarding the authenticity of his knives---most of which I don't notice until someone else points it out. I'd reckon there is a high probability of that knife being "assembled" outside of the factory, due to his history, but, I don't really know. Use whatever color suits ya. ::tu::

SportsKolb does sell some legitimate knives, but he also sells a lot that are not.

BRL's jibe re" red backgrounds was directed specifically at this seller.

Most of the time now when I or anyone else answers an authenticity question with "Red background", it's really more of a joke.

But, if you're going to bid on SportsKolb's knives, you better know your stuff.

I personally don't care for xx wth the later shield u find on USA and dotted.

The rear pin being sunken doesn't scare me to much considering how thick the handle is, rather boring stag.

I think the knife is all case parts, nothing screaming it's been apart.

The frame and pin placement looks correct for xx era. More things are steering xx era than the opposite direction.

I wouldn't be fighting for this one, I agree you need to know your stuff if u want to bid on sportys. But I've seen his sell some nice stuff, and turn a blind eye on some.

If my life was on the line to say yes it's legit or no it's fake..

I would go with LEGIT.

But yes, I reconigze the caution signs. And if I purchased I'd put it up to all the test while under any return policy

I have 40 or so xx knives, all have the tall S shield, and a few with tested circle C

I have seen many xx it seems lately with USA/dotted flat S lately, ironically all on stag 88's

If I had a 5488 with 10 dot pin placement and xx blades I'd be more concerned.

Thank you XXTXX,
That is an excellent example and a great learning experience, I appreciate the time you took to display that. It looks like the USA era pin is about half the length of the bolster and the USA dotted is about the length of the bolster.

Why spend that much for a questionable knife? ::shrug::

Don't understand what's questionable here, the only thing not standard is the shield, but the flat S shield has been known to been seen in xx just as the xx shield is known on tested..

Is there a rule on flat S on xx? I've seen this primarily on stag 88's.

My comment wasn't necessarily directed at this specific knife. Just in general, if you have doubts about a knife why spend a large amount for it? If you don't have doubt and can afford it, go for it.

Just learning as well

I like to know the LAW on case.

But there is always exceptions, sometimes it comes down to if it your knife or mine.
