TL-29 Beer Scout mod with Amber smooth bone

Post by #goldpan »

My latest project is for Stakeknife (Ed). He contacted me about converting his Camillus TL-29 into a beer scout! Going to ditch the black plastic and replace them with Amber smooth bone from Cullpeppers.

Were going to keep the screwdriver and liner lock and the bail. The screwdriver is getting a cap lifter added to it and its staying the same length. He sent me enough smooth bone that we have enough left for Ed's next knife project! So here is where we are:

IMGP0007.JPG
The knife has been cut apart.

Here the handles scales and liners are laid out.
IMGP0009.JPG
The new handles covers have been roughly cut to shape.

The covers have been clamped and glued.

The cap lifter has been cut into the screwdriver blade and tested. It passed the first quality control test without being installed in the frame! ::ds::

We have come a long way in just a day. Guess I was in a hurry to test that cap lifter! ::super_happy:: Stay tuned for more updates. ::tu::

Hey Randy that's pretty cool!! Now I'm curious, is it easier to put new scales on a knife with only one bolster at the front as opposed to a standard knife with two bolsters? I would think putting new scales on that TL-29 is kind of like doing the same thing to a Barlow. I just wonder if it's easier on that kind of knife.

Its a lot easier Mike. Since I don't have to fit the covers between the bolsters. Just make sure that there is a good fit between the cover and the bolster, since there is no cap bolster to be concerned with. Then just shape the covers to the scales!

Just curious Randy. Was there multiple tests of that cap lifter? :D

I recommended lots of "field testing". We got to get this thing right. ::nod::

I agree Ed! We can't have that thing failing at a inopportune moment.

Mike, Dale, Greg thanks guys! ::handshake:: And yes multiple tests of the cap lifter system are in order! ::tu:: NASCAR is racing at Watkins Glen today and should provide ample opportunities for field testing! Of course it must pass the alternate container opening attempt. This is a serious test! ::tounge:: I'll be back after the race with pics of some of the tests that my quality control person will be performing. ::super_happy::

And Randall. Make sure the main blade is sharp enough to cut limes. Lots and lots of limes!

You bet Ed! A man has got to have his Limes! ::nod:: It will be hair shaving, lime cutting, razor sharp! Be careful when you get her back Ed. Check out this link from 6 years ago. https://allaboutpocketknives.com/knife_ ... it=she+bit

Alrighty then. The race is over and the test for opening an alternate container has been performed. She passed with flying colors! ::ds::

So to celebrate this momentous occasion I present the "mock up".

I still have a ways to go before I can pin it together. Its looking good though! ::nod:: The handle pins for the pic are brass. But the pins that are going on the finished knife will be nickle-silver. I think the contrast in color should make this girl pop!

Hope you like it Ed! Great choice in handle material, that amber bone has the amber beer color, perfect for a beer scout! Hard to see it in the pics, but I put a satin finish on the bolsters to off set all the shine and color. If your like shiny bolsters Ed let me know and I'll put a shine on em'!

Thanks Tony! You know what? I have this vision of a Barlow Beer Scout..... I have another TL 29 the same vintage as Ed's. Well when I find the time that is. ::nod:: Now that would be a rare Barlow for sure! ::tu::
