John W. Schatt Piercing Tool (Punch)

Schatt & Morgan knives were first manufacturer back in 1890. The Queen Cutlery company made most of the more recent examples, but Schatt had its own plant in its earlier years that cranked out the oldies. There is no shortage of fantastic Schatt & Morgan knives in existance that have been made over the brand's long & storied history.

John W. Schatt Piercing Tool (Punch)

Post by knowtracks »

In December of 1907 John Schatt applied for a patent for his leather punch and it was granted in June of the next year.
Here is a link from the Queen Historical sites Documents page, just scroll down to the article written by David Clark and give it a click!
https://queencutleryhistory.com/index.p ... -articles/

This is a laminated (two piece) punch similar to the punch patented by New York Knife Co. These are pretty scarce because most were used up, as they were meant to be. I have only seen a few of these survivors and just recently was able to obtain another one.
Here are two pretty much mint Jacks that I acquired from David Clark. They are the two that are seen in the article shown above.

This Ebony covered Jack recently showed up on the inter-tubes and I was lucky enough to acquire it. :mrgreen:
But she has had a pretty tough life, as most of them I'm sure have. The blade is about half gone and both blade and punch are tipped but these don't surface to often so I though I'd give her a shot. She had been squashed in the center pretty badly, bending all 3 brass liners and cracking the mark cover very badly. I filled up both beds with shim stock where the damage was most pronounced, filling them out to there original size. Then clamping the bottom together where it was badly gaped, in an effort to straighten out the liners. I left it that way for two weeks. Then I filled the huge crack in the ebony with super glue and re-clamped it for another week. It's not going back into service but it is another scarce example of this pattern.

Thanks btrwtr! ::tu::
I was just gonna post that link but decided to post the whole page because there's SO much kool information on it!
In fact I highly recommend that site for anyone interested in S&M and Queen cutlery as they are so intertwined.
So much work has gone into it, by So many, all for the love of the brand.

What great looking knives you are showing, Dave.
That "piercing tool" is impressive on these knives.
Nice save on the abused knife.
