Re: Schatt and Morgan, Titusville Pa. 1903 - 1933
I seen both brass and copper used on the old knives, as far as I know it was to keep the bail from corroding. There was a lanyard attached and that would hold moisture especially on the sea with salt water it would rust fast if it was steel.
There is a heavy patina on this knife and I don't buff my old knives so I did not see the military marks but they might be there, pretty sure this one was made for the Canadian military
Thanks for looking

Re: Schatt and Morgan, Titusville Pa. 1903 - 1933
Posting these two (Jess Crouch and Chris Wolf) because of their ties to Schatt & Morgan. I believe they were last made in 1915 for Sears.
There are lots of really gorgeous old knives in this thread, I'm blown away when I scroll through them.

Re: Schatt and Morgan, Titusville Pa. 1903 - 1933
hello, some of the SM knives you post seem like more recent made knives and some are older. Do you have access to newer made parts or are they just mint old examples ? Many of the knives are just fantastic examples. great collection !knowtracks wrote: ↑Thu Apr 01, 2021 11:54 pm Two real Beauties right there Lloyd!! You prompted me to dig mine out and to a comparison with the lockback....soon to follow!
I also have one of those metal "tweezers" Miller Bro's!! Only two I've ever seen but I'd bet they made a bunch of em!
Thank You Danno!!
Here's a barehead jack with some sweet honey bone that looks like it's brand new! Half stops and snaps like a trap!!

All the knives I've posted in this thread are original S&M made in Titusville acquired from several sources.celluloidheros wrote: ↑Sat Jan 01, 2022 3:21 amhello, some of the SM knives you post seem like more recent made knives and some are older. Re: Schatt and Morgan, Titusville Pa. 1903 - 1933
With these knives being reproduced. Is it possible that people might use the parts in older knives ? I know that when the Case Classic series came out that it caused some issues. Is there any way to tell from the marks whether they are old or new ?knowtracks wrote: ↑Sun Apr 04, 2021 12:52 am Thanks cudgee! Than one is as close to pristine as any T-ville Schatt that I've ever seen!
Week or so back Lloyd/Duffer posted his Beautiful Lockback and Advertising S&M's, and it got me to thinkin........
One of the things that was so to me was that Queen bought Schatt and Morgan lock, stock and barrel. So that when, under Bill Howard's hand, Queen decided to make the Annual Reproduction or Keystone Series and then the File and Wire Series, they were making these old S&M patterns with the same old original machinery, set-ups, tooling and work benches. Making the same exact pocket cutlery, in the same exact way, at the same exact work stations as they were made dang near a 100 yrs ago. Still basically made by hand by skilled cutlers. I really hated to see Queen go down so much American cutlery history.
Anyway....... that was the long way around the barn for this comparison of the Original and the F&W Lockbacks.
I expect everyone reading this knows it's a big knife @ 5 1/2" and the lock release is positioned way closer to the pivot than most lockbacks.
Just the bottom bolster and subtle differences between the two. The rat tail size and where the cut swedge stops. The pull placement and length, pin locations, thickness of the blade and spring are exactly the same.

Smaller single blade, well used but not abused jack. My guess is that it was a spear point, still nice brown bone. 3 1/4" closed

Apologies to Harold and Joe. In my post on Nov 16, 2021, when commenting on their recent postings, I accidently gave them two thumbs down, instead of two thumbs up. I hope they knew what I really meant.

Bought this old Schatt and Morgan in Salisbury, MD yesterday. Swell-center, double end jack, ebony, just shy of 4". Lots of wear but an equal amount of character.Still tight and snappy. Happy to make this rare find. J.O'.

Re: Schatt and Morgan, Titusville Pa. 1903 - 1933
I attended the Queen Factory auction in 2019 and went through the whole building and basement looking at the thousands of unfinished blades as well as the un repaired knives ( I bought quite a few and restored 13 so far) was a site to see... kinda sad too. My mom was born in Titusville I only live about 42 miles away now.I just paid my son's college tuition so I only spent $450.00 that day but I would of tripled that.I did get two S&M auto's and one Queen,So far restored 2 gonna do one more this winter.I have a lot of paperwork as we bought everything in the MGr's office including file cabinets, chair, computers, desk filled with Queen, S&M, Moore Maker, Remington purchase orders and knife drawings/ tracings with design changes and updates for department head meetings. Pretty cool stuff
