Re: Old Keen Kutter Knives
This pocket knife arrived today. It was in a group of pocket knives that I bought for one, particular pocket knife. This is NOT that one, particular pocket knife. This is a KEEN KUTTER "K1", 2 blades, 3 3/8" closed, 2 tang stamps pocket knife. It needed a little cleaning. I took some pictures and here it is.

Re: Old Keen Kutter Knives
I picked up this Keen Kutter ebony barehead jack at the antique mall yesterday. It is 3 5/16" OAL, and has steel bolsters, liners, and pins. It has the E. C. Simmons, St Louis MO tang stamp. If you look closely at the photos, it can be seen that the pen blade was a nail file that had the file pattern ground off to make a pen from it. Is it safe to presume that this was done at the factory when the knife was made? Nothing can be felt by running the fingernail down the length of the blade, but the pattern can be seen if the light is caught just right. On the back of the master blade is the very faint etch F5 up near the spine just ahead of the tang. Very tight old knife with good snap, not used or sharpened much.

Is the F5 inked? Probably 3 1/4” buy Kk measurement. F=file 5 KK pattern number. My thinking. Nice knife .Harold

Re: Old Keen Kutter Knives
Looks inked. Do you think the file was made into a pen after it left the factory then?

Re: Old Keen Kutter Knives
Beautiful old knife, Olde Cutler! I would be inclined to believe that the pen blade did not start out as a file. I think the pattern on the pen blade is the remnants of a glazed finish. I like the Keen Kutters with the etched pattern numbers. I believe that they are early Walden made knives.

Re: Old Keen Kutter Knives
Great Keen Kutters everyone! Fun to look through this thread to learn. I have a couple quick questions about one from my dad’s old collection. According to what I’ve learned, it’s likely a Schrade, peach seed jig, post 1940. 879 stamp on the Master. Should the blade be etched? The blades look to me to be stainless, but there’s no SS or Stainless markings. Also, the stamp does not have “ears”. Is that right for the era? I have a couple other knives and a pretty old display case I’ll post later. Thanks! Buck
Re: Old Keen Kutter Knives
Nice Schrade made Keen Kutter, buckshot. I believe that the Schrade made Keen Kutters were from the 50s? No "ears" is right for the era. The "ears" are generally thought to indicate a Camillus made Keen Kutter. The blade, in all likelihood, originally had an etch.
