Lanyards

Post by Rossr »

I got down a bit of a rabbit.hole. I cleaned up a imperial easy open knife and posted.it in the restoration section. I had a gent ask about leather laynyards. So i did some Internet sleuthing and made up some 4 strand braid laynyards. Pretty new to me so.curious opinions. The one I made on the knife works fine but obviously I dont always have the knife. So untried a single loop a double loop and I happen to have some heavy 1/2 split rings.

I like the split ring best so far . I wonder how else it can be done.

Ross, as we talked earlier ,really like that length! What kind of braid is that, really like it as well. As far as attachment, like the way you did without slip ring . How would that work without it?
Liking what you’re doing ,talk later.

Do you mean without the split key ring? The other just feeds through the loop. You put around the bail then feed the end through the loop. You can kind of see in the pictures of the black one and the multi colored. I think my concern is the lace wearing out over time and it falling off with the single loop especially.

The braid is called 4 strand round braid. The end is what I believe is a wall knot maybe or crown. I saw it referred to as both so I'm not sure.

There are lots.of braiding techniques and some of the horse gear is beautiful and very intricate.

I'm just a guy learning so dont take anything I say as gospel!

I like the looks of those Ross. A small metal split ring should work well on knives having a bail, but so does the split leather. The one on the left in your picture appeals to me the most as it looks as if it could also be used on knives having lanyard holes through the handle, like a Remington Bullet type of knife. Many modern (tactical) knives have a hole or a slot through the handle - I’m not sure a metal split ring would spread open far enough to go on one of those knives. So a piece of soft split leather might be the way to go assuming it’s long enough before the braid begins.

Couldnt agree more Ken. I want to play around some more with the loop concept . I like the soft split leather thought. Just a matter of how to apply it.

I played around learning some.more. I. Noticed where I connected to the split ring it didnt seem quite soni went back and found my error. Also learned tou can get 2 different patterns too.

I'm not reinventing the wheel here folks have ben braiding long before I arrived. Just learning for myself.

Over the years I've bought tools off ebay etc and sometimes the groups came with misc rolls of lace. So ive been digging around the shop and now a tan color one. A cream one which just says finest quality lace from Tandy on it. And lastly a black and cream mix.

I cant seem to stop ::dang:: ::ds::
