First attempt to sharpen a blank
First attempt to sharpen a blank
Hi guys,
Wondering what your thought would be on the photos here.
It’s my first time putting an edge on a blank so be gentle but any advice would be great.
Cheers JT

Looks great. Did you use a Lansky?
Re: First attempt to sharpen a blank
Cheers mate I am kinda happy for first attempt.
As the blank had no edge/angle at all, I started with the bench grinder to get an angle, then a Precision Adjust...........same same but different.

Re: First attempt to sharpen a blank
Wow I'd be scared of a bench grinder but whatever works I guess. I had a couple of knives with unsharpened blades that the diamond stones on a Lansky worked great for. You dd a good job on that.
Re: First attempt to sharpen a blank
You have done a great job, i would not have the confidence to start with any sort of grinder, you are obviously competent using one.
Re: First attempt to sharpen a blank
That looks good, JT. I recall reading that the factories had special milling machines to cut those blanks into blades. Seems like keeping the blade from getting too hot would be an issue - any problems with that?

That looks perfect to me!
I have used a belt sander (320 to 400 grit) to sharpen blanks, but never a bench grinder.
As far as heat buildup, I always keep a cup of cool water to cool the blade.
If it feels hot to the fingers, it gets dipped!

Hi Mel,
No real problems with heat really,
It did get hot at times but minutes before I was sharpening some Chisels on oil stones and the stone was still covered in oil, so every time it got hot I quenched it a bit on the oil, this cooled it enough to carry on after a wipe with a rag.
I am kinda making up the process as I go, as this is all new to me ha !!!

Also I should add, I have not used a Beench Grinder much , but I guess that being a tradesman for 30+ years gave me some control and confindence ??
