Re: Are Pocket Sharpeners Bad

Dale, I like the Flexcut Gold as well and also use aluminum oxide compound on some strops. You bring up a great point about stropping returning a razor edge. ::tu:: When folks speak about sharpening I don't often hear the mention of using a strop. In my opinion, if you maintain your blades by stropp...

Re: Are Pocket Sharpeners Bad

Sharp tools are for sissies ... push harder! Seriously though ... I'm no professional, but I highly doubt you would ruin the temper by hand sharpening. As Ken stated, over heating is your enemy in that regard. I sharpen with power but prefer diamond stones when honing by hand. Another thin...

Re: Looking forward to retirement, but.......

Rick, I can't draw a straight line with a ruler, so I'm right there with ya'. What helped me were carving books with patterns. One of the first books I purchased was Carving Compact Characters by Jack Price. All you need is a small block of wood 1" - 2" square, trace the pattern on and hav...

Re: Looking forward to retirement, but.......

A pocketknife just feels good in the hand ... I'm sure you will be just fine in retirement finding uses for your pocketknives.

I like doglegg's suggestion ... "Never hurts to whittle a little."

I retired a year ago and always enjoy time to whittle ...

Thanks, John. Seeing your Texas Jack reminded me I have one packed up along with a 75 large stockman. I pretty much only buy CV knives from Case anymore, love to use 'em. ::tu::

Very nice, Colonel ::tu:: ... (I received one in yesterday's mail)

Speaking of CV, not to hi-jack your thread, Shepherd Hills offers a slick little 6318PU (medium stockman CV) with punch blade.

Re: Preferred blade steel

CV! ... ::tu:: ::tu:: One of my favorite patterns Case has done in CV is the 63052 (medium congress), not only are the blades CV but they all have long pulls as well! Would like to see them put long pulls on a few more CV patterns ... and I'm still waiting them out and hoping for a Seahorse Whittler...

Re: Medium stockman

I have a few 63032 medium stockman's (great lil' pattern) and they all measure in at 3 1/2" closed length. I've noticed many Case dealers quote the closed length of the 63032 at 3 5/8" ... I can't speak for the 6318, as I don't think I have one of those. Not sure about the SMKW catalog kni...

I agree, the cells are definitely eye candy but at what cost down the road, although, I would buy if the price is right; can't go wrong with pearl and stag though. ::tu::

I can't compete with the wonderful collections you all have, but I sure enjoy looking at 'em ::tu:: .
