Re: Testing the Edge

I see in this section many threads about various ways to achieve a sharp edge. What I do not see is how you are testing that edge to determine if it is sharp. So, boys and girls, what is your favorite method for testing the edge of a newly sharped blade? Thank you. Kevin Roll up ur pants and start ...

I want to reopen this thread.

Using my thumbnail is impractical as is shaving my arm. Tomatoes or other food is wasteful.

What else do you folks do?

Re: SHARP TALK

Kevin, So what stones are your favorite? I’ve got quite a few myself, but I go to Norton stones a lot, India or carborundum. The DMT diamond cut well for s30v and D2 though. Currently using a set of DMT Diamond stones with a magnetic base to save my knuckles and a homemade wood base to stabilize th...

Re: SHARP TALK

…Sharp is - having an edge that will do the job required for that knife, and retain it's edge during the day… That is it, in a nutshell. I sharpen things everyday. People bring me items and tell me they want a razor’s edge on it. They have no idea what they are asking. I explain what I hear them as...

Re: Beach "Retirement?"

Defiantly has to be using some type of grinder. Don't think you could make any money using stones. Those little 1x18" belt grinders form Harbor Freight are what I see a lot of guys using. Actually, with a good set of stones you can. I use DMT diamond stones, 12x3” or so. Nice and long so I get...

So, you’ve had this stone a few months. How has it worked out for you?

This was brought to me today to be sharpened. The owner was rather nonchalant when I quoted a price to repair the damage.

Re: How much to charge to sharpen knives?

I still charge $1 per inch for straight edges and $1.50 per inch for serrated edges. Have not changed my prices in 12 years.

And I misspoke, we only had 350 customers, my apologies.

Each edge I return is tested on receipt paper for sharpness.

Re: How much to charge to sharpen knives?

Herself and I survived!! Seven days of solid sharpening, nearly 400 customers. What a week! I have a newfound respect for my bench stones, enough so I am considering retiring my foot powered wheels.

Thank you for the thoughts and support.

My wife and I come to the Chicago area four time each year to sharpen in a small chain of grocery stores. Been doing it for six years and we enjoy it quite a bit.
