Re: Unusual English Knife

wostenholm started in the early 1700s and continues to this day under the ownership of the egginton group. george nixon started up around 1835 and ceased trading around 1860. marsh brothers traced their roots to 1631 and stuck around for more than 300 years, shutting down in the 1960s. i can't help ...

Re: Unusual English Knife

to me, it looks like "celebrated cutlery sheffield."
that narrows it down to a few makers.
george wostenholm, arthur lee, richard race, george nixon and marsh brothers all used this phrase, and i'm sure others did, too.

Re: Overdone Pulls?

it's certainly unusual, but it's not a deal-breaker for me.
the long pull seems a little too low, and the crescent pull seems too large to me, and they would've looked better as matchstrike pulls, imo.
the sabre grind of the blade is sweet!

wow, i guess i'm in the minority here (nothing new for me, i guess).
i think the new northfield 73s look great!
yes, i would've preferred fancier bolsters, but i think the swedge and double pulls look very cool.

the "drooping blade" is indeed a common occurrence with queen-made knives, and has been for years. as you said, it's an very easy fix, so it's baffling why they've never figured out how to do it at the factory. blade play is uncommon, except on their mountain man pattern. i understand your...

Re: A Pair Of Queen City Classics

those are some of my favorite knives queen has ever made. i got a full set of the canoes a few years ago, but i waited too long on the trappers, and a full set is basically impossible to find. i think 100 of each canoe was made and 50 of each trapper, although i think cumberland's website says 100. ...

Re: Schatt and Morgan fit & finish

BOTH have blade play/wobble. pretty common with the mountain man, but the barlow is a surprise. like justold said, send them to queen and they'll fix them free of charge. I normally stick to GEC's and Northwoods... almost all northwoods folders are made by queen using the same standards they use fo...

good advice, justold.
it sounds like the seller might have some *ahem* faulty information.
unless he's charging $5, i'd pass on by.

these were made as the 10th "premier" edition for clarence risner. they took forever to get made, and they are apparently fraught with problems. of all the examples i've seen, none were put together particularly well. i've only spoken with a couple of owners, and neither was very happy. ::...

Hello mito0; Are you saying my Queen CBS Conoe 64 CARVED Bone STAG 2005 was a 1980 to 1990 knife and not made in 2005? Ken nope. "justold's csb canoe represents the newer model. notice the longer bolsters and thicker blades. i believe they switched to this version some time in the late 80s or ...

Re: New-to-me Canoe

that was the standard canoe for queen from the mid 70s up until the late 80s or early 90s, i believe. the handles are usually a stag-textured delrin like yours. they also made a "rawhide" version with wood handles. fairly common. since i collected nothing but queen canoes for a while, i ha...

Re: Favorite GEC Scales?

It's actually Ox Horn. ::uc:: i think gec messed up on the description. an ox is a castrated male bovine (domesticated cattle). i'm not sure how they determined that horn came from castrated male cattle. the only other animal known as an "ox" is musk ox, which that is definitely not. that...

My first Ebay knife. I was going to use this one but now I don't know. I like the Winterbottom. this is the struggle most of us encounter when we get a new knife in our hands. this is my way of deciding: if i am completely smitten with the knife and plan on keeping it forever, it goes in my pocket....

Re: Source for Queen Cutlery

yep, the series xv is probably your best bet.
as knowtracks said, it's a stockman configuration, rather than the whittler setup on the series xx, but the sheepfoot blade gives it more versatility.
it also has polished blades instead of the glazed blades of series xx.
