Re: sfo

there were 16 made of the peanuts. I think 3 muskrats, of which I have 1. Do not know how many trappers or what else may have been made,
Don was a long time collector and helped run the Allegheny Mt. club for a long spell. His widow Mary may remember how many total were made.

a few kitchen knives. The Winterbottom one was made by Fred Sampson when he was Master Cutler as a sample piece. The crosshatch stamping is different from regular old hickory pattern.

this is one of Fred's big folding hunters. He told me he made less than 20 of them. At one time I had 10 of them and gave most away to kids and family. I think one or 2 had ebony scales.

Re: source

Over the years, I have run into Fred at Titusville shows and he is always more than happy to answer inquiries. Really a great source of information!
While master cutler he had his own stamp and made some terrific folders!

Re: Scavenged steel?

There is nothing wrong with using "found" steel for blades IF you can identify what you have. I have access to spectrograph and x-ray procedures . Any time I find stashes of unknown metal it has paid off for me to ID them . BTW, Black Diamond files are an excellent source of W2 steel. And ...
