Re: W Wright - Sheffield

Totally agree, Joe. That is too nice a knife to risk doing anything to the covers. Absolutely could not agree more. A little mystery about the scales is no bad thing imo, but I would not mess with a piece like this. What a catch! On principle I would go with genuine tortoise shell until proved othe...

Re: German Lockback knives ?

I'm only just getting back to playing on here so a bit late to this thread. There's some lovely pieces there. Linder make some very sturdy lock-backs in Solingen and seem to be under appreciated in my view. I can't see the one's I have on the Linder Shop website, but have a look here for some images...

Re: Sheffields' hollow bolster

IIRC the Rickartz(sp) Brothers came to Sheffield from Solingen in 1932 and set up making this format of pocket knife under the Richards brand name. The business plan seems to have been to gain the lion's share of the lower end of the market by exploiting the hollow scale/bolster system which enabled...

Re: French Knife

The bee was chosen for the Laguiole style of French knife because it was the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte's personal heraldic emblem. It was used on lots of his personal his stuff. It was on all his tableware and probably his underwear for all I know. Many of these knives are made in other countries s...

Re: Aird & Anderson Horseman's Knife

What a great knife. I have to agree with k7k as far as it's manufacture is concerned. However, I think A & A were makers of woodworking planes. I have a mate who is a joiner and a life-long collector of woodworking planes and tools and he may know something helpful. I'll ask him and report back...

Re: A.Wright & Son - First Impressions

In my experience of A. Wright & Son pocket knives you have to be lucky. We have a large hardware store not far from my home which stocks them and I have handled quite a number. All function very well, but are let down by the fit & finish. I have one of their Barlows in my collection and agai...

My first CCC

I have just acquired my first Camillus Classic Cartridge. It is a CCC-5 Trapper and I'm delighted with it. I have one question at this time. The paper in the box and some posts here say that CCC knives were limited editions, but how many of each were produced? Does anyone know please? Season's greet...

Re: A few questions on a Laguiole please

Fos sur Mer is a port town on the French Mediterranean coast. The original settlement goes back to pre-Roman times. I guess they commune decided that tourists might like to buy a pocket knife as a souvenir, but where they got them made I don't know. Most likely a local trader bought a number from a ...

Re: Some shopping advise please

Thanks very much for the thoughts, Knife-mates. We got back to the UK on Friday after a really amazing holiday. The only disappointment was the lack of knife buying time, but that was no surprise. The one opportunity I got was a couple of so-called antique shops in one small New England town. Unfort...

Re: The new Colt slipjoints

Good stuff, Glenn. Looks like they solved the stain problem. I suspect mine were from a batch that somehow missed a process in manufacture. They all came from the same UK vendor over just a couple of weeks. I have a Colt Stockman with horn scales and Titanium coated blades, but the truth is it has b...

Re: Some shopping advise please

Philco, that's a great idea and if I was on my own or with like-minded companions or if we had more time and less people to visit I'd be onto it. As it is............. David I was a bit afraid of that. Too bad your itinerary does not include coming to Kentucky. I could route you out a tour that wou...

Re: Some shopping advise please

Thanks one and all for the suggestions. Of course the obvious thing was to ask the friends and family we will be staying with about local outdoorsy type stores, but they're all about as outdoorsy as a tea cosy so I drew a blank. Philco, that's a great idea and if I was on my own or with like-minded ...

Some shopping advise please

Next month LOML and I will be in the USA on holiday visiting friends and family. We will be in Washington DC, NYC, Woodstock CT and Duxbury MA. At some stage on this trip I would like to spend a little time in a store looking at traditional pocket knives. And who knows? I might make a modest purchas...

I had to send all 5 of mine back. The colour was running off the scales onto my hand and whatever I put them down on. I hope they've solved that problem.

I'm after the Mauser with File/Match-Striker (rev.2 of the saw/opener tool) now. It's great to find the one you're hunting for and I'm pleased for you. We all probably know that feeling. Durafil or equivalent

Some years ago I acquired some Durafil. It was profiled plastic strip that fitted between the liners of a folder up against the spring and stopped the blade hitting the spring on closing. Not all folders have a kick on the tang to do this. Now I cannot find it anywhere, so if anyone has a bit to sel...
