Re: Weak snap on a GEC?

I've been saying for over two months, of only they had produced some with liner locks, there would be no issue. The collectors could get the lockless, and the folks who actually wanted to use theirs could get locks. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the workmanship that went into this pattern. Gorgeo...

Re: GEC # 97

Recieved mine yesterday, it will be going back. As stated above, this pattern was designed as a hunting knife. Well, I wouldn't get within 5 feet of a deer or bear that needed dressed with this knife. My #43 has what I would describe as an extremely light pull (especially for it's size,) and it is M...

Re: What Knife Would You Like GEC To Make ?

What percentage of GEC knives sold to date have become users ? I bet less than 10%. Hence GEC's customers mostly want good looks as well as first rate workmanship. How easy/hard to sharpen the blade is not a consideration for the 90% who buy to collect. kj Well I reckon I'm an oddity, but of the 47...

Re: What Knife Would You Like GEC To Make ?

I want GEC to make a #97 Allegheny knife with a swing-guard. Brass bolsters and a curvy style brass swing-guard ! A real old school knife. Oily Creek bone , autumn leaf bone , & tiger maple wood I think a #97 with an ornate swing gaurd would be a bit much, borderline gawdy. That said, with a bl...

Re: Mail Call, Post Your New GECs.

That #62 is very nice. It looks nice for sure, I just dont like it near as much as I thought I would. The blade size/configuration doesn't bug me, but the weak spongy action on the secondaries combined with the half stops, really turn me off. The main has a near perfect action, but the secondaries ...

Re: Mail Call, Post Your New GECs.

Nice ones Ajd. Are you going to carry the M&G for the pleasure of having it with you ? kj I want to. I carry it around the house some. The bareheaded, long pull/cut swedge & pen is my absolute favorite configuration of all the #15s made, and those happen to be the rarest as well. I'd Like t...

Re: Mail Call, Post Your New GECs.

The 81 abilene stockmans were made in 2013, so far the only run. I think they will always be pricey, there's just not that many and it's such a good stockman. Sometimes you can get lucky but it's not the norm when they turn up. Agreed. The #81 Abilene stockman being so pricey isn't because it's a f...

Re: Mystery #97 Northfield

1. There is no Northfield factory. Tidioutes, Northfields, GECs, F&F are all produced in the same building, by the same folks. None are "better knives," they just have different trim and features. 2. The box 1602 of blank bovine bone slabs marked autumn gold are exactly that: 1602 piec...

Re: GEC # 97

Aside from Stag, I don't believe anyone will have any trouble getting a #97, or even a #97 in every cover. They are planning on the run totaling 5000-5500 pieces (potential Northwoods run not withstanding.) I didn’t get in on the stag. It was closed too quickly and they were a lot more sketchy abou...

Re: What Knife Would You Like GEC To Make ?

I personally would love to see the #35 pattern in a stockman configuration, preferably in stainless. Also think a #14 flipped around version (like the #79 is of the #78) in a single spring, opposite end pen knife would be really neat. Ok. Go ahead and give me a Moose on the #35 frame as well. And a...

Oh yeah, and I have an autumn jigged bone and Texas rose on reserve. And if they decide to do some of the Northfield ebonys with a satin blade, I'll almost certainly pick one of those up as well.

Re: Unpopular Patterns

The 66 and 82 stockmans are my favorite recent GEC's, but it seems many people don't like three blade knives very much. The most popular ones are one and two blades. I'm glad they're making stockmans at least. One of these days they'll do another 81 stockman run and I'll be very happy, and broke. W...

Re: Unpopular Patterns

To hoist this thread back up onto the tracks I'll write it appears the least popular GECs are all models with more than two blades. For me the more blades the merrier but last year's 66 Stockmans are still plentiful at dealers and December's Dixie Stockmans are selling very slowly. The 66 and 82 st...

Re: Unpopular Patterns

What I really want to know is, what's GEC going to make next, after the 97s? Scuttlebutt is a run of #12 Powderhorns, possibly with some new acrylic. Geez, #12s? I hope not. I'd rather buy a 38 Special, which have also been unpopular and are readily available. Toothpick patterns have never appealed...

Re: Unpopular Patterns

Am I the only one who thinks that the 06 pattern was remarkably popular considering the relative flop of the 18 pattern from a couple years ago? Considering how similar the stag 06 is to the natural stag 18 (same length, identical blade, etc ) I am really surprised that the 06s sold out as fast as ...

FINALLY got my hands on a #48 jack! A Tidioute #48 weasel was my very first GEC, and I've always loved it's slender frame and long clip, but always missed the utility of having a smaller blade. They made do few if these jacks, I wasn't sure I would ever track one down for a price I was willing to p...

Re: GEC #81 Bull Moose/Un-popular Design?

Quote Ajd: "My Northfiled ebony, however, has practicly 0 snap on the clip." This likely is due to some 'factory grit/gunk' in the pivot area. Try flushing it with WD-40 while moving the blade open-close (not all the way). When it flushes clear lube with a few drops of mineral oil or othe...

Re: What Knife Would You Like GEC To Make ?

I stand corrected. The #13 and #61 are pretty much identical in length, (#61 might actually be a fraction of a MM longer) but the #13 brings half an inch more main blade to the table (#13 2 7/8" #61 2 3/8".) In terms of actual cutting edge, according to the 'ol calipers, the #61 has 2.15&q...
