Source for a good froe?
My son actually enjoys splitting wood for kindling (!). I was thinking of getting him a froe and mallet, but don't have a local source. Anyone here have a suggestion for a source?

Douk Douk - Anyone use wooden handles and reuse the blade and spring?
I have a weakness for the spear point knives and recently bought a new Douk Douk squirrel. It is kind of the definition of a utility knife. The thing is French-made and simplicity itself. Blade/backspring/rivets/handle(s)/bail. I like the carbon steel blade, but I found myself wondering if anyone ha...

What's your best "found it, thought I lost it" story
I am just susceptible to GEC and Northwoods folders. No other word for it. So I purchased the blue (!) handled barlow below. I never owned a blue knife in my life, folder or otherwise. But there I was running around with it in my pocket. Until I wasn't. Don't you hate losing a knife? You keep reachi...

Re: Seeking advice: Camillus TL-29 restoration
NS or n/s usually refers to nickel silver, (aka German Silver or white brass). Typically 60% copper, 20% nickel and 20% zinc, (per Wikipedia). I never remember the percentages, had to look them up. ::facepalm:: Hey, glad to see you posting again Dale. Fingers crossed for continued health & well...

Oops. 4.10 inches.FRJ wrote:Thank you, flangster.
Folding knives are almost always measured in the closed position.
It tells what the frame size is which is very descriptive in most cases.

A drop of 3 in 1 oil restored the snap the the Imperials in no time. What a great deal on these . . .

I like 'em
Thanks. My n00by is showing through. But yeah. Those slanted/pinched bolsters are great.

Barlows - How the Mighty Are Fallen
I posted about my disappointment with a recent purchase. It was a Barlow pattern from Bear & Sons. Ug. It is the knife marked "B" in the picture below. I like the wood handles and that it was American made. Good snaps on the blades. My criticisms? I didn't like how difficult it was to ...

I recently bought a Great Eastern Cutlery Northfield #54 in "Autumn Gold Bone," UN-X-LD which arrived from KnivesShipFree.com. No connection to them (other than as a satisfied customer). From my first Swiss Army Knife when I was 6, I have have retained a love of the spear point. The #54 ha...

Re: Bear & Sons Rosewood Barlow - a little disappointing
I had another go at the Bear & Sons with the Lansky sticks. It is cutting OK. I did see some Imperial barlows on e-bay that could be spruced up. I think the carbon steel is a better fit for my uses. I'll keep my eye on the Uticas though.

Bear & Sons Rosewood Barlow - a little disappointing
I was recently looking for an American-made Barlow and after some shopping, bought a Bear & Sons Rosewood Barlow from Amazon. I was a little disappointed in the product. The blades came ground pretty aggressively, and yet were not that sharp. I have tried a number of sharpeners to get the edges ...

Mutt & Jeff: Let's see your odd EDC combo.
Here's today's Mutt & Jeff combo:
Schatt & Morgan + Victorinox = no job untackleable. Well. . . not really. But this is what wound up in my pocket this morning. Yesterday it was an Opinel and a Northwoods spear point.

Re: Number 1 of 150 - Does it matter? PIX
OK. Here we have the Northwoods folder on top, and the Schatt & Morgan on the bottom. I suppose that it should not be surprising that the knives are similar. Both have a single spear blade, ebony scales, brass pins, and nickel bolsters. Both have brass liners. The Northwoods is stamped "201...

Number 1 of 150 - Does it matter?
I recently purchased a Schatt & Morgen Keystone #99 Scout from Knives Ship Free in response to one of their promotional e-mails. It has ebony scales and nickel bolsters and is just the sort of folder that I fall for. It arrived yesterday and is marked (silkscreened?) 1 of 150 . . . does this mat...

Re: Seeking advice: Camillus TL-29 restoration
You can always take some pin stock and peen that hole in full, then redrill it. Or, your can melt some solder in the hole and redo it. Don't give up on it that quickly! :) You think the hole will stand up to normal use if it is half-filled with peened brass? If so, I'll give that a try. Thanks for ...

Re: Seeking advice: Camillus TL-29 restoration
Thanks for the photo Dale. I popped the knife in the vise and looking down at it, realized my difficulty. Guess where the bozo behind the drill put the hole in the bolster? Duhhh. Off center. So you know what happens when you drill out a pin off center? [Sound of a dope slap] The holes don't line up...

Seeking advice: Camillus TL-29 restoration
Here's the question: I have taken apart and cleaned all the parts of a Camillus TL-29 electrician's knife. This is the first time I have taken one of these apart. I am putting the knife back together and have replacement rocker and rear pins in. And I have a neat vise from Dale to help get it all to...

Re: First .22 Semi-Auto Recommendation
Let me offer a slightly different perspective. If you are going to use what you train with, you might consider a platform like the CZ 75. You can order the pistol chambered in whatever centerfire caliber you like (9mm,say, or .40) and CZ sells a conversion kit that will let you easily swap barrels/s...

Oooh. I'm in it now. Seriously though: it is something of a relief to know that my confusion might be . . . because it is confusing. But I'll tell you true: every time I log on here, I learn something. That is pretty cool, I have to say.
