All I know is when Case has a run on second cut the price is higher. For what reason I don't know, I always wondered what the difference was between first cut and second as well.

It does resemble an oyster knife, but I'm with you on the handle. An oyster knife isn't a delicate tool, usually they're pretty damn stout.
