Re: Do do do, lookin’ out my back door!
You folks have some killer back yards! ::tu:: This is the back forty in April. Can't quite make out the deer hunting cabin up on the ridge in the background, creek runs down in the bottoms below. Blue ridge, in the far right bottom corner, is in Arkansas. On a clear night, you can make out the light...

Re: Razors Etc. From The Robeson Cutlery Company
Heck of a collection, Charlie! Congrats on putting it together! ::tu:: I found this one last week at a flea market in SE Kansas. No blade etch as near as I can tell, but it does have a nice bit of file work and tooling along the spine. A light stropping and it'd be ready to go. Number on back is 160...

Re: Colonial Fish Knives
Nice grouping! ::tu:: Before TV sportsmen like Harold Ensley showed them how, most fishermen didn't fillet fish, they 'cleaned' them. Along with cutting bait, line and other generalized tasks, fish knives were designed more for that purpose and much less for filleting. But they do work quite well fo...

Great bear carving!
...but what's really impressive is, picking up a knife and doing a wood carving after the job you did on your thumb! Now THAT deserves extra credit!
Well done!

Re: How do I find the value of knife collection
If you're not looking to sell the collection, most price guides printed within the past 5 years or so will work pretty well for establishing an insurance value. Like the others, I'd also love to see the collection whatever your intent. We do like pictures 'round here! It's as close to feel-a-vision ...

Re: Imperial? Single spring. No stamp. No main blade?
Those two blades would have been in reverse positions on the backspring and accessed from the pile side. Typically there would be an issue such as the spey blade opening too far or one or the other closing too far or not far enough. If no issues, then I would guess that it left the factory that way....

That's pretty neat, Dimitri! I have one, but never knew they came on a card. Without looking, I think the one I have is imprinted with "compliments" of an auto parts store or something along those lines. Nice little find and I especially like how the card says Made in USA, Printed in USA a...

Well howdy neighbor! You're up and over a couple of counties, Bob's just a bit farther. I'm down in Taney County, about 3 miles from the AR border. IIRC, we talked a few years ago about you possibly moving to the area. Glad ya finally made it.

Re: Well used little imperials( not shell handle)
There's been a few discussions over the years as to the origins of shadow bolstered toothpicks. I have them stamped 'Imperial' and some are marked 'USA', but I've never come across one with a Colonial stamp. WB Well now you have seen one. Thanks Ray, I stand corrected. Here's a few non-shell Imperials. SANY0003-001.JPG ...and the pride of my entire toothpick collection. A very early example with pen blade, dual tang stamps and Rogers bone slabs. I'm pretty sure it's never been carried or used and it's likely one of the rarest knives I own. SANY0005.JPG SANY0011.JP...

Re: Colonial prov USA Fish knife
My guess would be, it's either a factory mistake, or more likely someone has taken it apart and removed the scaler to make it more pocket friendly. Shell handles are pretty easy to do that to, without leaving much of a trace.lgdoolittle wrote:It says fish knife on the shield

LOL! Yah, 40 degrees doesn't work. Reminds me of the first winter after I started this business. We had a large order due by Christmas and we were finishing it with an oil based alkyd enamel. When I put the primer on it was 70 degrees, no problem. Two days later, a half hour into spraying the colore...

Re: Utica Cutlery Co
Voyles has a pretty decent section on Utica in his IBCA guide. I'm not sure how their numbering system works, but in celluloid, Uticas catalog number is 43581. I would assume the '3' is for number of blades, but other then that... ::shrug:: It doesn't show that shield or make reference to it, though...

This is pure speculation on my part but there is a possibility that by cutting into the sheet(thereby disturbing the outer layer and exposing the inner part to the atmosphere)that may have triggered the reaction. I hadn't thought of that, but I bet you're right. I had cut a 1" strip along the ...

Not a very good pic, but here's a custom that my brother designed and built about 15 years ago. I EDC'd it for about 10.
Titanium liners, nickel silver bolsters, ivory Micarta handles and blade/backspring are ATS-34.
