This is an Italian made Koh-I-NOOR mechanical pencil converted in the US to a Single action Auto Spike. Press the button on the end and the spike shoots out via spring loaded action and locks in place.  Flip it over and press the button again and the spike will fall with gravity back into the handle 75% of the way..pushing the button and pressing the tip against something will retract the spike the rest of the way into the handle.  It's a very fun and sturdy conversion.  When I slid a pocket clip on it scratched some of the paint, otherwise it's been handled very little.
