ADDITIONAL INFO:                        The Camillus #23 pattern is an oversized jackknife pattern that was very popular as an advertising knife for felt companies who supplied felt to the paper industry. Large heavy rolls of felt were used in the process of making paper. These large sheets periodically had to be removed and new sheets cut from rolls to replace the old sheets. These large 4-1/4 inch knives were ideal to cut the heavy rolls of felt and they are often found with celluloid handles and a name advertising the particular felt company who had given these knives to the workers in the paper mill. While these large knives made a great tool in their place and time, today they make a great canvas for someone who likes to restore and customize knives. I found this piece of stabilized cross cut mammoth ivory at a knife show recently and purchased it and begin the search for the perfect knife to serve as the canvas on which to display this beautiful piece. I vaguely remembered I had several years ago purchased a Camillus #23 that had been in much better condition than most of them. After a couple of days of looking I found it and begin the process of restoring the knife with these beautiful handles. This had ivory has been stabilized by a vacuum application of a resin and it has been epoxied to the brass liner to further stabilize it. I think this knife would make a great centerpiece for many collections.
