ADDITIONAL INFO: There were a number of knives made in the #400 series in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Benchmade was still in their first location in Clackamas Oregon, several years from moving to their Oregon city location. I have a #405S that I bought in approximately 1990 (plus or minus a year or two), it has a partially serrated clip blade of ATS-34 steel. All the descriptions I could find on the #400S describe this deal as being SG2. It is a product of Japanese Powder Metallurgy made by the Takefu steel company. One article I read on SG2 said that many knife aficionados say that SG stands for Super Gold, and it is considered by many to be one of the finest cutlery steals. I believe Benchmade discontinued the 400 series of knives several years ago. Even the term as SG2 is now obsolete and G3Si1 has replaced it.
This is a great early Benchmade knife circa 1990 and would make a fine user knife or an excellent addition to a Benchmade collection.
