Vintage Winchester Flashlight
Made in America!
The one and only Winchester Repeating Arms Company teamed up with Simmons Hardware to open up a line of their own hardware stores, which operated from about 1918 to 1930. These stores offered a whole catalog of tools, hardware and other goods. You could swing by the Winchester store to pick up a hammer, a flashlight, or even a pair of roller skates! Despite producing high quality products for over a decade, the endeavor wasn't as successful as they had hoped. And although the Winchester brand survived, the Great Depression forced them to abandon the Winchester Store operation.
Here is a great example of the type of quality products you could expect to get from a Winchester Store. This is one of Winchester's "Cartridge Series" flashlights, meant to resemble a casing and projectile. The handy octogonal shape near the lens prevents the flashlight from rolling away when laid on it's side. There is some minor oxidation inside as this baby is made of copper. But don't take my word for it; underneath the Winchester trade mark, it is stamped "Solid-22-K-Copper" (see pics) It has a full on/off switch as well as a toggle button. It still has a bulb in place.
