Vintage - Ray Haselton Custom - High Carbon - Unmarked - Straight Razor?
I recieved this "knife" in a lot which had several custom knives and refurbished blades from Ray Haselton of Vermont. This style matches up with his custom work that I have seen. The blade has obvious signs of use and resharpening as well as the wear and markings you'd expect to find on a blade this age. It has very light patina with light pitting on the pile side only. Given the thickness of the blade, the knife actually has some weight to it. Unknown wood type used in handle construction. The handle is capped off with a beautifully finished piece of stag.
Not much to go on here, as the knife is free of markings. I'm just following the "read the knife" rule. My initial impression is that the knife is made from a repurposed old straight razor. Wedge shaped blades were pretty much the only style available until the mid 1800's Of course you can still get wedge shaped blades today, but they are very uncommon. No telling how old this thing really is. It's very unique and reminds me of a handcrafted Queen chess piece.
Blade: 3 1/8" high carbon, wedge shape
Handle: Carved wood, brass fitting, carved stag pommel
OAL: 8 7/8"
