This is a very nice example of a very old Vintage Humanson & Beckley Equal End Shadow Pen Pocket Knife in very good condition considering it’s between 104-168 years old. The knife has a used and sharpened carbon steel narrow spear point main blade with a long nail pull. The front face has a few light scratches from use and only a few very scattered very light pits. Stamped deeply into the front face is H. & B. which is common on most of their knives. The rear face also only has a very few light pits. Both blade faces polished up very well. Stamped on the front tang is H. & B. over) MFG. CO. (over) N. BRITAIN. On the other end of the frame is a used and sharpened carbon steel pen secondary blade with a long nail pull. This blade was definitely the workhorse on this particular knife. The front face has some scattered light pitting but the rear face is clean. Both faces are pretty much clean with some old rusting lines. Stamped on the front tang is H. & B. (over) MFG. CO. (over) N. BRITAIN. Both blades still have excellent open and close snap and hard “thumps” on the half-stops. The knife has a gorgeous set of very fiery genuine Mother-of-Pearl scales. There is a very tight hairline crack on the front face that runs from the top liner down to and through the center pin and then down to the bottom liner. Let me stress this is a very thin hairline crack and the scales are completely stable. There is also a very tiny chip off the very end on the front scale. They’re very fiery and both sides exhibit the blues, greens, pinks and purples along with the silver and white when turned in the light. There is a brightly polished nickel silver, long and narrow, bar shield inlaid flush in the center of the front scale. There is a shallow easy open on the top of each scale to allow easier access to the nail pulls on each blade. There are three polished nickel silver handle pins in each scale. The liners are brightly polished brass. It has a single brightly polished steel back spring and it’s free of any cracks or breaks and continues to perform the functions it was designed to perform. This nice old vintage Humanson & Beckley Mfg. Co. Equal End Pen Knife is 3” in length and made between c.1852-1916. H. & B. was purchased by Landers, Frary & Clark in 1916.
